Disability Positive

Disability Positive We are Disability Positive. We help people with disability and long-term health conditions to live well. We provide you with services, opportunities and a voice.

We are a charity based in Cheshire and work mostly in the North West. The social model of disability is the starting point for everything we do and is the idea that people are not disabled by their condition, but by a world that doesn’t meet their needs. We have services to help you with everyday life, being part of your local community and looking after your wellbeing. We can offer advice, help w

ith practical tasks and advocate for you in lots of situations. We listen and share your experiences to influence positive change in government policy. We know it matters, because we live with disability and long-term health conditions too. Visit www.disabilitypositive.org to find out more.

The conversation around disability benefits reform continues...

This week, the Government published the interim findings of the Timms Review of Personal Independence Payment (PIP), highlighting concerns that the current system is not working as well as it should for many disabled people.

As discussions continue about what happens next, it’s important that the voices of disabled people, carers and those with lived experience remain at the heart of any future changes.

A fair system should help people feel respected, supported and able to access the help they need when they need it most.

You can read more about the interim report here: https://zurl.co/oD79S

What do you think should be the top priority for creating a fairer disability benefits system? 💬

We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments. Please keep the conversation respectful and considerate of others’ experiences.

When many people think of disability, they often think of something they can see. But many disabilities and long-term health conditions aren’t immediately visible, including chronic pain, fatigue, mental health conditions, hearing loss, learning disabilities, autism and ADHD.

That’s why understanding, patience and avoiding assumptions matter.

Not every disability is visible, but every person deserves understanding, respect and access to the support they need.

By increasing awareness of invisible disabilities, we can help create more inclusive communities, workplaces and services for everyone.

It’s Disability Pride Month.

Disability Pride is about celebrating identity, challenging stereotypes and recognising the value that disabled people bring to our communities, workplaces and society.

One of the biggest barriers disabled people can face isn’t always physical - it’s misconceptions and assumptions.

That’s why we’re asking: If you could change one misconception about disabled people, what would it be?

Whether it’s the idea that all disabilities are visible, assumptions about what disabled people can achieve, or misunderstandings around accessibility, we’d love to hear your thoughts.

Let’s start a conversation that helps build greater understanding and inclusion. 💜

July is Disability Pride Month. 💜

A time to celebrate identity, challenge stereotypes and recognise the strengths, talents and contributions of disabled people.

This quote from our CEO, Lynne Turnbull, reflects something many disabled people know all too well - navigating a world that isn’t always designed with accessibility and inclusion in mind often requires resilience, creativity and determination.

But Disability Pride isn’t just about overcoming barriers. It’s about recognising the value of lived experience, amplifying disabled voices and creating a society where everyone can participate, contribute and thrive.

When disabled people are included in conversations, decision-making and leadership, communities, organisations and workplaces become stronger for it.

This Disability Pride Month, let’s celebrate the power of lived experience and the importance of making every voice count.

In May, Disability Positive responded to the Government’s SEND reform consultation. 💜

We’ve heard from many of the families we work alongside that they want to see improvements to the SEND system. That’s why we took the opportunity to share our views and raise important considerations regarding funding, accountability, inclusion, staff training, and co-production.

We believe meaningful reform should be shaped by the experiences of disabled children and young people, their families and the organisations that support them.

As we await the Government’s response in the coming months, we’ll continue to champion the voices of the people and communities we work with.

What do you think should be a priority for SEND reform? Tell us in the comments. 💬

July is National Picnic Month. ☀️

For many people, a local park is a place to relax, meet friends, spend time with family or simply enjoy being outdoors.

But how accessible is your local park?

Accessibility isn’t just about getting through the gate. It can include:
☀️ Accessible parking
☀️ Level pathways
☀️ Accessible toilets
☀️ Seating and rest areas
☀️ Clear signage
☀️ Inclusive play equipment
☀️ Good public transport links

Everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy outdoor spaces and feel included in their community.

We’d love to hear from you - what makes a park or outdoor space accessible, and is there a local park you’d recommend? 💬

Why is everyone suddenly talking about the Disability Pay Gap?

The Government is proposing mandatory disability pay gap reporting for large employers to help identify where inequalities exist and encourage positive change.

But the Disability Pay Gap isn’t just about pay.

It can highlight wider barriers that disabled people may face throughout employment, including recruitment, career progression, workplace accessibility, culture and retention.

Understanding these challenges is an important step towards creating workplaces where everyone has equal opportunities to succeed.

Real inclusion isn’t just about measuring gaps - it’s about understanding the reasons behind them and taking action to remove barriers.

What do you think employers can do to better support disabled employees? We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

Festival season is approaching. 🎪☀️

We know accessibility can make a huge difference when deciding whether an event feels enjoyable, welcoming and realistic to attend - so we wanted to share a few inclusive and accessible festivals we’ve come across across the UK.

Some events you may want to explore include:
🎪 Bham Disability Festival & Inclusive Walk
🎪 SENsory Fest Yay Wirral
🎪 Unity Festival Hijinx Unity Festival

These events promote features such as accessible facilities, inclusive environments, companion support, quiet spaces and performances led by disabled artists and communities.

Just to note: we haven’t personally attended or assessed these festivals, so this isn’t an endorsement. These are simply events we found that appear to promote accessibility and inclusion and may be worth exploring if you’re looking for summer activities or community events.

Have you attended an accessible festival or event you’d recommend? Let us know below.👇
