Europe’s first accredited family stem cell bank and UK Queen’s Award winner, Future Health Biobank.

Future Health started by storing cord blood stem cells in 2002 and within four years it had stored its 10,000th sample. Another five years on and the company’s purpose built cryogenic storage facility has over 50,000 stem cell samples for families from more than 45 countries in its care. A cord tissue storage service was added in 2009 and now services to capture cells from other sources identified for potential medical use – such as dental pulp and adipose tissue - have been introduced with further services.

What happens to a donor blood sample in our laboratory?

Here, the sample is being loaded onto the Abbott Architect i2000. Before testing, the barcode is scanned to ensure the sample matches the information entered onto the system.

The instrument performs 8 different serological tests: HIV, HTLV, Syphilis, CMV IgG, CMV IgM, Hep C, Hep B surface antigen and Hep B core antibody.

The information provided may determine if a sample can be stored and provides information relevant to any transplant centre if the sample is released for transplant.
