🚨 3 MISTAKES THAT COULD BE HOLDING BACK YOUR PROGRESS!

As Sports Rehabilitators, these are 3 common mistakes we see in people looking to improve their recovery, reduce injury risk and maximise performance.

1️⃣ DOING TOO MUCH, TOO OFTEN 🏋️

Strength training, running, cardio, circuits and sport — all while trying to push your performance every session.

The problem isn’t necessarily how much you’re training, but how well you’re managing your training load and recovery.

✅ Our advice: Structure your training around your goals, physical capacity and the specific demands of your sport. Remember, more isn’t always better!

2️⃣ PRIORITISING THE 1% OVER THE 99% 🧊

Ice baths, saunas, massage guns and recovery gadgets all have their place.

But are you getting enough sleep? Eating enough to fuel your training? Staying hydrated?

You can’t consistently neglect the fundamentals and expect recovery tools to make up the difference.

✅ Our advice: Prioritise quality sleep, nutrition, hydration and appropriate recovery before chasing marginal gains.

3️⃣ ONLY TRAINING WHAT YOU ENJOY 💪

We all have exercises we love and others we’d happily skip!

But neglecting mobility, accessory strengthening, stability work or sport-specific conditioning may leave gaps in your physical preparation.

✅ Our advice: Build a well-rounded programme that addresses your individual needs, weaknesses and sporting demands. Not everyone needs the same prehab routine!

TRAIN SMARTER. RECOVER BETTER. PERFORM STRONGER. 🔥

At Forge Injury & Performance, we help athletes and everyday gym-goers recover from injury, improve their physical capacity and return to performing at their best.

MICHAEL | SHOULDER REHAB EP.6 🔬💪

Dumbbell External Rotation | Eccentric Rotator Cuff Strengthening

Continuing Michael’s shoulder rehabilitation, we’re focusing on developing rotator cuff strength, control and tolerance to loading.

🔬 Today’s exercise: Dumbbell Shoulder External Rotation

By emphasising a slow, controlled lowering phase, we increase the eccentric loading demands on the shoulder’s external rotators.

💪 Which muscles are we targeting?

🔸 Infraspinatus – A primary shoulder external rotator.

🔸 Teres Minor – Assists external rotation and dynamic shoulder stability.

🔸 Supraspinatus & Subscapularis – Contribute to glenohumeral stability, although they aren’t the primary external rotators.

📈 WHY ECCENTRIC TRAINING?

Controlled eccentric loading can help develop muscular strength, improve load tolerance and prepare the shoulder for the demands of exercise and sport.

Our goal is to progressively build Michael’s capacity to return to pain-tolerable pull-ups, kettlebell training and consistent workouts.

Struggling with persistent shoulder pain? 👀

At Forge, we combine detailed clinical assessment with progressive, individualised rehabilitation to help you return to the activities you enjoy.

MICHAEL | SHOULDER REHAB EP.5 🔬💪

Rotator Cuff Strengthening & Dynamic Shoulder Stability

Following our comprehensive shoulder assessment, we’re now translating our clinical findings into a targeted, progressive rehabilitation programme.

🎯 Our focus: Improving rotator cuff strength, neuromuscular control and shoulder capacity under load.

🔬 TWO EXERCISES WE INTRODUCED:

🔸 Banded Dumbbell Shoulder Press – Combines external resistance with overhead pressing to challenge shoulder strength, dynamic control and load tolerance.

🔸 Bottoms-Up Kettlebell Press – Increases demands on grip strength, rotator cuff coordination and shoulder stabilisation through a challenging load position.

📊 WHY THESE EXERCISES?

The rotator cuff contributes to dynamic glenohumeral stability by controlling humeral head movement during upper-limb activity.

Our aim isn’t simply to reduce pain, but to progressively restore strength, movement confidence and tolerance to the demands of training.

📈 Michael’s goal: Return to consistent pull-ups, kettlebell workouts and unrestricted training.

Struggling with persistent shoulder pain?

Don’t just manage the symptoms. Understand your limitations and build the capacity to overcome them.

MICHAEL | SHOULDER REHAB EP.4 🔬💪

Final Assessment | Functional Shoulder Testing

To complete Michael’s shoulder assessment, we explored external rotation (ER) and internal rotation (IR) using a wall-supported 90/90 shoulder position.

🔍 What were we looking for?

🔸 Shoulder rotation range of motion at 90° abduction.

🔸 Differences in movement and symptom response between sides.

🔸 Introducing light resistance to assess muscular control and tolerance to loading.

📊 Why is this important?

Assessing movement both with and without resistance helps us understand how Michael’s shoulder responds to different physical demands.

These findings, combined with our previous assessments, help identify potential contributing factors rather than assuming one single cause of pain.

📈 WHAT’S NEXT?

Across this mini-series, we’ve gathered valuable information to guide Michael’s individualised rehabilitation programme.

🎥 EP.5 – THE REHAB PLAN

We’ll take you through how we use these findings to build a progressive rehabilitation programme for persistent shoulder pain, with the goal of returning Michael to consistent pull-ups, kettlebell training and pain-tolerable exercise.

MICHAEL | SHOULDER REHAB EP.3 🔬💪

Shoulder Assessment | Rotator Cuff Testing

Following our previous assessments of neural involvement and scapular mechanics, we progressed to a comprehensive shoulder examination.

🔍 What did we assess?

🔸 Active Range of Motion (AROM) – Assessing movement, symptoms and functional limitations.

🔸 Passive Range of Motion (PROM) – Exploring joint mobility, symptom response and potential movement restrictions.

🔸 Resisted Testing – Assessing shoulder muscle strength, load tolerance and symptom reproduction.

🔸 Rotator Cuff Special Tests – Exploring potential rotator cuff involvement through targeted clinical testing.

🔬 Why is this important?

No single shoulder special test can reliably identify the exact source of pain.

By combining movement assessments, strength testing, clinical history and symptom responses, we can build a clearer picture of the potential contributing factors.

📈 THE GOAL?

Identify Michael’s current limitations and develop a progressive rehabilitation programme to help him return to pain-tolerable pull-ups, kettlebell training and consistent exercise.

MICHAEL | SHOULDER REHAB EP.2 🔬💪

Scapular Mechanics & Shoulder Pain

Following our initial neurodynamic assessment, we explored Michael’s scapular movement during active shoulder flexion and abduction.

🎥 In the video, visible muscular twitching can be observed around his left upper trapezius and rhomboid region.

🔬 What does the evidence tell us?

Scapular dyskinesis describes altered shoulder blade movement, but it isn’t a diagnosis or necessarily a cause of pain. These movement variations can also occur in pain-free individuals.

Similarly, visible muscle twitching doesn’t automatically indicate dysfunction.

However, assessing scapular mechanics can help us identify potential contributing factors involving muscular coordination, movement strategies and load tolerance.

📈 Our rehab approach

We’re introducing:

🔸 Scapular protraction and retraction drills

🔸 Serratus anterior punches

🔸 Progressive scapular strengthening

The goal isn’t to create ‘perfect’ shoulder mechanics, but to improve muscular capacity, movement confidence and tolerance to loading.

🎯 The end goal: Get Michael back to consistent, pain-tolerable pull-ups and kettlebell training at home.

Scapular mechanics may be one piece of the puzzle, not the whole picture.
