The Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists (AACP) is a professional network (formerly clinical interest group; CIG) affiliated with the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP). More than 6500 physiotherapists who use acupuncture within clinical management in both the National Health Service (NHS) and private practice are members of AACP.

The CSP’s insurance change around thoracic acupuncture has understandably raised questions for physiotherapists.

But an insurance exclusion is not the same as a change to professional scope of practice. The key issue is ensuring that thoracic needling is undertaken with the right combination of training, competence, clinical reasoning, anatomical knowledge and appropriate indemnity.

Our latest article takes a closer look at what the change means in practice; from understanding the anatomy beneath the needle and considering individual patient factors, to informed consent, documentation, recognising potential complications and checking your insurance arrangements.

It’s a timely reminder that safe acupuncture practice isn’t about avoiding higher-risk areas altogether. It’s about making well-informed, clinically justified decisions and continually maintaining our knowledge and skills.

The HCPC is gathering insights into how registrants are using AI and other new technologies, with the aim of understanding the opportunities, challenges and support that may be needed as technology continues to evolve.

The research is being carried out independently by Ipsos UK, and responses will help ensure the experiences of different professions and modalities are properly represented.

From Training to Competence.

As acupuncture and dry needling become increasingly accessible within physiotherapy practice, it’s important that we distinguish training, certification and clinical competence.

A certificate shows that education has taken place, but competence involves much more.

It means being able to:

🔹Assess the patient appropriately
🔹Understand anatomy, contraindications and precautions
🔹Apply safe needling techniques
🔹Make sound clinical decisions
🔹Recognise and manage adverse events
🔹Know when acupuncture is appropriate and when it isn’t
🔹Recognise the limits of your own knowledge and skills
🔹Continue to develop and maintain competence through practice, CPD and reflection

Ultimately, the question shouldn’t simply be:

“Have you completed an acupuncture course?”

It should be:

“Can you demonstrate that you have the knowledge, skills, clinical reasoning and professional judgement necessary to provide acupuncture safely and appropriately?”

Because training and competence are related - but they are not the same thing.

That’s a wrap on our final Foundation Course weekend in Homerton 🙌

What a fantastic weekend with a fab group!
The course was enjoyed by all, with a great mix of engaging learning, plenty of laughs and lots of hands-on practical training 👏

Delegates had plenty of opportunity to put their skills into practice and build confidence - making sure everyone was truly ‘on-point’… 😉🎯 Pun absolutely intended!
