You know you’re an OG Massage Therapist when… 😂
Apparently handwritten client notes, filing cabinets and paper diaries are now nostalgic.
I still love a paper file and the paper diary is staying! 🤣
Seeing a few “OG therapist” posts made me think about how I started.
And bloody hell, we put the hours in.
We spent months learning anatomy and physiology before we were let loose on actual humans. Textbooks, exams, bones, muscles, origins, insertions…
We had to earn the right to touch a hamstring. 😂
Then came the hands-on hours.
And case studies.
So. Many. Case. Studies.
I remember around 150 hours of them for Level 3 alone. I’ve blocked out Level 4.
I assume my brain is still protecting me from the trauma. 🤣
And I massaged EVERYONE.
Friends. Family. Neighbours. Work colleagues. Friends of friends.
If you had muscles and stayed still long enough, you were fair game.
Hundreds of hours.
Unpaid.
Because I wanted experience. I wanted to know what different bodies actually felt like under my hands.
Then I needed paying clients.
There was no Instagram strategy.
I had leaflets.
I stood at parkruns bribing runners with sweets to take one.
“Would you let me massage your calves? I have Haribo!” 😂
I massaged at events. In fields. Wherever anyone would let me put the couch.
If the couch fitted, the clinic was open.
Slowly, people came. They came back. They told other people.
And somewhere along the way, I built a proper clinic. ❤️
My work looks very different now. I’ve studied, evolved and added all sorts of skills and tools.
But I’m still really proud of my Sports Massage Therapy roots.
Those hours taught me things you can’t fast-track.
To listen. Notice. Adapt. Know when something doesn’t fit. Know when not to treat.
And remember there’s a person attached to the body part they’ve asked you to look at.
The profession has changed.
My filing cabinet apparently hasn’t. 🤣
And after all these years, my most important tools are still my hands, eyes, ears and brain. ❤️
OG therapists — what have I missed? 👇😂
And if you’re an OG client, as many of you are, thank you for staying! ❤️
How many of the clinics did you recognise? 😂
