Blackheads are one of the most misunderstood skin concerns.

They’re often blamed on “dirty skin”, which leads people to scrub harder, exfoliate more aggressively, and throw every pore strip they can find at the problem.

The reality is very different.

A blackhead forms when oil and dead skin cells become trapped inside a pore and are exposed to air, causing them to oxidise and turn dark. They’re not a sign that your skin is dirty.

In fact, over-scrubbing and harsh exfoliation can irritate the skin, increase inflammation, and sometimes make the problem worse.

The goal isn’t to scrub blackheads away. It’s to improve how the pore functions by managing oil production, keratin build-up, and inflammation while protecting the skin barrier.

Understanding the cause is the first step towards treating them properly.

Have you ever been told blackheads are caused by dirty skin? Let me know below 👇

Yesterday, my final morning on Necker Island, was particularly emotional. The last hike was unplanned until Sir Richard heard me mention that I really wanted to hike Necker and without hesitation he said, I will pick you up and whomever else wants to comes at 0630. Done. We had so so many laughs in that 2 hours. The cactus photo with me was orchestrated and in fact taken by RB himself! The 2 greatest lessons from him were to “give back” and have as much fun as possible along the way. So much of what is in my head is not for here or content but simply to carry me forwards with greater strength 💪🏽🙌🏽🙏🏽

Everyone wants to know how to get rid of acne fast.

The problem? That mindset is often what keeps people stuck in the cycle of breakouts.

Acne is rarely just one thing. Hormones, inflammation, excess oil production, barrier dysfunction, and even the skin microbiome can all play a role. That’s why aggressively throwing products at your skin for a week often leads to more irritation, not better results.

Real acne management isn’t about attacking your skin into submission.

It’s about creating the right environment for your skin to function properly again. That means consistency, reducing inflammation, supporting the skin barrier, and using the right ingredients for your skin rather than chasing quick fixes.

If you’ve been struggling with breakouts, I’d be interested to hear what’s been the most frustrating part of your acne journey. Let me know in the comments below.

Sir Richard Branson decided to invite me to join him on Necker Island, to celebrate my birthday. He even paid a bunch of people to come and pretend to be my friends 😂 OK seriously though, too many words needed for today so won’t say much 😂 A number of firsts for me and it was - inspirational, emotional and fun. Thank you Sir Richard for welcoming us to your incredible island.

I’m really looking forward to my talk
This will highlight how a total lack of scientific insight and judgment at the highest level over 40 years ago, led to a pandemic effect of the “wrong advice” by every relevant medical practitioner and LASER company in the world, ultimately affecting (and continuing to do so) hundreds of thousands of people.

People need to stop normalising irritation in skincare.

If your vitamin C serum is causing:
• burning
• redness
• flaking
• breakouts
• tight, irritated skin

…that does NOT automatically mean it’s “working.”

A lot of traditional L-ascorbic acid formulas require a very low pH to remain effective, sometimes as low as pH 2.5–3. Add denatured alcohol and fragrance into the mix, and you’ve got formulas that can seriously disrupt a compromised skin barrier.

What’s worrying is how often these products are still recommended for patients with rosacea, sensitivity, or eczema-prone skin.

Long-term low-grade inflammation isn’t always visible, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t happening.

Skincare should support skin health, not fight against it.

“Contains peptides” means absolutely nothing if you don’t understand WHICH peptides are actually inside the formula.

Some peptides signal collagen production.
Some help regulate inflammation.
Some target movement lines.
Some help with pigmentation and tissue repair.

And perhaps most importantly… concentration matters.

This is why skincare science is far more nuanced than marketing buzzwords.

Not all peptides do the same thing.
Not all formulas are built equally.

I’m pleased to be joining the Gloves Off Panel: Aesthetic Treatments – Trendy or Timeless? at this year’s CCR London.⁣

In a landscape driven by innovation, social trends and evolving patient expectations, it’s more important than ever to discern what’s genuinely effective from what’s just trending.⁣

I’ll be joined by a wonderful line-up of practitioners for a conversation led by Alice Hart-Davis, as we explore:
✔️ What treatments are gaining traction
✔️ What’s falling out of favour
✔️ What has proven staying power in modern aesthetics

If you’re attending CCR London, I’d hope to see you there.

Thanks to Living360 for featuring my comments and opinion on Kim Kardashian’s latest launch, the Skims Seamless Sculpt Face Wrap.

While the product makes bold claims about sculpting and tightening the face, I explained why there’s little scientific evidence to support long-term results. At best, compression garments may offer short-term improvements in puffiness through fluid redistribution, much like the marks left on your skin by tight socks.

I also highlighted the potential downsides of prolonged compression, such as skin irritation, impaired lymphatic flow, and barrier disruption if used incorrectly.

When it comes to achieving real, lasting improvements in facial tone and skin health, my advice remains the same: focus on evidence-based solutions such as energy-based devices (radiofrequency, ultrasound), collagen-boosting skincare, and maintaining good lifestyle habits.

It’s always encouraging to see a wider conversation about beauty standards and product claims, and I’m glad to contribute a voice of science and clarity to the discussion.

Yesterday marked 78 years of India’s independence (15th August 1947). A day not only of remembrance, but of reflection. For me, as a proud Brit of Indian heritage, it is a moment to honour the courage of my parents who journeyed here from India, and the resilience of a nation whose roots run deep in science, philosophy, and healing.

India’s contributions to the world go far beyond politics or history. From the wisdom of Ayurveda — a system of health and balance thousands of years old — to yoga, meditation, and plant-based remedies, many of these traditions now find resonance in Western medicine and lifestyle. We are rediscovering that true health is not just the absence of disease, but the harmony of body, mind, and spirit.

As a doctor, I am reminded that progress is not about choosing between East and West, but about learning from both. Modern medicine saves lives. Ancient medicine teaches us how to live. Together, they offer us a path not only to longer years, but to better ones.

So today, I celebrate my Indian heritage, my British identity, and the universal pursuit of health and freedom. 🌍✨

Happy Independence Day 🇮🇳
