☀️ I’ve been back in the garden playing with a few ideas…

☀️ Thinking outside the box has always been a strength (although it also means I’ve not always been the best at following instructions! 😉)

☀️ Taking the pens outside, I’d already spotted the holly bush (definitely not one of my favourites!) and started thinking about how I could use it in a coaching session…

☀️ So pens met holly leaf and… this was the result.

☀️ It’s amazing how a simple smile can suddenly soften something sharp and spiky.

☀️ My hope is that this becomes a gentle coaching tool, while also encouraging children to get creative outdoors too.

☀️ The aim is to build emotional language in a safe, relaxed environment and the fresh air is always a bonus. 🥰

☀️ Reaping the benefits of the garden

I thought I’d give this incredible obstacle course designed by a client a go after they left… 😜

🤭 Needless to say, there was quite a lot of giggling involved!

Movement in coaching sessions can be so beneficial for regulation, especially for neurodivergent children and young people.

I sometimes use the Alert/Organise/Calm approach recommended by OTs to support focus and regulation.

🏃 Alert
Running, balancing and negotiating the obstacle course

🧱 Organise
Designing a calm space for Chewbacca using Lego

🎶 Calm
Back into the garden to lie on a rug and listen to the birds

Honestly… what’s not to love about my job?

Calm coaching ☀️

☀️ Finger breathing can be such a simple little calming strategy for busy and overwhelmed minds.

☀️ I honestly think being creative, can be really calming for all ages and abilities.

☀️ It doesn’t have to be paint and mess either… play dough, kinetic sand, drawing, building, colouring… it all counts.

☀️ This activity was just a gentle reminder to slow down, pause and breathe.

Dear parents and carers,

I’m sending this with love and empathy. This is a tough time of year for our young people and for you…

When our children and young people (and you) are struggling, here’s a little gentle reminder that regulation comes before revision.

When our bodies are fuelled and regulated, our minds are more ready to learn.

So my suggestions are before your child settles into revision, try allowing 10 minutes or so for:

Food
Water
Movement
Calm
Connection

Sometimes the body needs support before the mind can focus. 💛

You’ve got this…

☀️ Sometimes it’s the simplest things that make us smile, releasing those happy hormones.

☀️ This little card made me smile today.

☀️ I hope it brings you a little bit of joy too.

Weird… this is a word I hear a lot in coaching… whether it’s describing self, others or actions.

BUT

I love weird. The children and young people know this because I tell them to be proudly weird!

Weird is what makes each and every one of us unique, special and enough.

Let’s embrace our weird and encourage our children to embrace theirs too. 🥰

It’s that time where revision starts to build up.

I see this a lot in my coaching room… what can look like avoidance is often overwhelm, and shutting down is the body’s way of protecting.

When it feels like “everything”, bringing it right down can help them get started.

This is a tough time for your children, and for you too.

Take a breath when you need to, and find small moments to pause.

Zoe xx
