Direct Cremation: A Simple, Affordable Alternative

Funeral choices continue to evolve, with more families seeking simple, meaningful and affordable ways to say goodbye. According to the latest SunLife Cost of Dying Report, direct cremations now account for around 21% of all funerals in the UK, reflecting a growing preference for flexibility and value.

A direct cremation is an unattended cremation without a traditional funeral service. It provides a dignified farewell while removing many of the costs associated with a conventional funeral. The 2026 SunLife report found the average cost of a direct cremation is £1,628, significantly lower than a traditional funeral.

At Roseberry Funeral Service, our direct cremation package is available for £1,300, offering a caring local alternative to many national providers. Families receive:

✨ ️Transfer of their loved one into our care, day or night
✨️ A suitable coffin
✨️ Transport to the crematorium
✨️ Cremation fees included
✨️ Return of ashes in a scatter tube if requested
✨️ The opportunity to visit their loved one in our Chapel of Rest without additional charges
✨️ No other hidden fees

What makes Roseberry Funeral Service different is our personal approach. Choosing a direct cremation does not mean giving up the opportunity to say goodbye. Families are welcome to spend time with their loved one in our Chapel of Rest, with visits included as part of our direct cremation service.

For those who would like a more formal private farewell, use of our Service Chapel is available for a small additional charge. This provides a peaceful setting where family and close friends can gather, play meaningful music, share photographs, and take a moment to reflect before the cremation takes place.

Many families who choose a direct cremation later arrange a memorial gathering or celebration of life, allowing them to remember their loved one in a way that feels right for them. This flexibility is one of the reasons direct cremation has become increasingly popular.

As an independent local funeral director serving Redcar, Marske and Guisborough, we believe every farewell matters. Whether you're planning ahead or arranging a funeral today, we're here to provide guidance, compassion and a service tailored to your family's wishes.

At Roseberry Funeral Service, we understand how important it is for families to say goodbye in a way that feels personal and comforting. Our private service room offers a calm, welcoming space where families can gather together, share memories, enjoy tea and coffee, and create a farewell that truly reflects their loved one.

Recently, a family chose to hold an informal service within the room, bringing along treasured photographs and personal mementoes to celebrate a life well lived. Moments like these remind us that every farewell is unique, and we are here to support families in creating meaningful tributes in whatever way feels right for them.

Whether you would prefer a quiet private gathering, a traditional service, or something more personal and relaxed, our team will guide you with care, dignity, and compassion every step of the way. 💙

Here at Roseberry Funeral Service we like to ensure we are up to date with changes, or possible changes, to our profession. To keep you informed we have summarised a recent proposed update to burial & cremation Law in England & Wales.

Key points include:
• Grave reuse – Older graves (potentially 75–100+ years) could be reused to help address the growing shortage of burial space, with safeguards in place and families given the opportunity to object
• Consistent rules – A clearer, nationwide framework to replace the current mix of older laws
• Cremation updates – New guidance around ashes, including what happens if they remain uncollected
• Future planning – Consideration of more environmentally friendly funeral options and clearer rights for families

At this stage, these are proposals only, and no immediate changes have been made. The Government will review the recommendations before deciding on any next steps.

🗓️ The next update is expected once the Government responds to the report, likely within the coming months - we’ll keep you informed as things develop.

Today, on St Patrick’s Day, feels a little more personal for us. ☘️

In recent years, we’ve come to understand just how strong our own Irish connections are — and like many of you, it’s been a journey of discovering stories, roots, and a deeper sense of where we come from.

Days like today remind us how important family is. The stories shared, the memories held close, and the generations that came before us all shape who we are.

At Roseberry Funeral Service, that connection to family is at the heart of everything we do. It’s a privilege to support you in remembering and celebrating the lives and histories that mean so much.

However you’re marking the day, we’re thinking of you all and sending warm St Patrick’s Day wishes. 💚

Mother’s Day is often filled with flowers, cards and busy restaurants, but some of the most meaningful memories of our mums are in the smallest moments.

The way she made a cup of tea just right.
The little sayings she always repeated.
The meals that somehow tasted better when she made them.
The way she always knew when something wasn’t quite right.

It’s those everyday moments that stay with us.

This Mother’s Day, whether you’re spending time together, remembering your mum, or sharing stories about her, those small memories are often the ones that mean the most.

From all of us at Roseberry Funeral Service, we’re thinking of all mums and the families who love them. 🤍
