How can organisations help support LGBTQ+ young people? 💙

• Validate Identity: Respect the name, pronouns, and terminology a young person uses to describe their sexual orientation or gender identity.
• Create and use safe spaces: Ensure homes, schools, and youth groups are inclusive, allowing young people to feel safe and secure.
• Active listening: If a young person opens up about their identity, let them set the tone and pace of the conversation, offering support without pressure.
• Visible Representation: Celebrate LGBTQ+ identities year-round, not just during Pride Month!
• Training and education: Provide training for staff to better understand LGBTQ+ issues, such as around avoiding assumptions around sexuality or gender identity.

☀️ Summer self-care ideas! ☀️

As the weather is getting warmer here in the Borders, here are some tips to look after your mental health in the summer months:

• Hydrate – have plenty of water and perhaps enjoy an iced drink.
• Find shade – make sure you're giving yourself plenty of breaks from the sun.
• Go tech free for a while – try setting some social-media free time to be present in the moment.
• Spend time outdoors – perhaps you could try one of your favourite activities outdoors instead, such as reading or working out.
• Slow down – with the days being longer, there is often a pressure to always be busy. Remember to take things at your own pace.

Your wellbeing matters!

Transitions can be tricky. At the end of summer, many young people will be going up a school year, moving to a new school, or perhaps planning to head to university or an apprenticeship.
This could mean living somewhere new, meeting new people, or adjusting to a new routine🌻

As a parent or carer, you can help to notice if a young person is struggling with change. This might look like:

• Change in behaviours such as sleeping or eating
• Increased anxiety, such as expressing worry about what comes next
• Withdrawal from friends or reduced engagement at school
• Physical complaints such as headaches or stomach aches
• Being irritable or quick to anger

YoungMinds has some helpful advice for parents/carers supporting young people through transitions. Check out their page here:

TIPP skills are simple techniques to help quickly reduce emotional distress. They can help us regulate our emotions and prevent impulsive behaviour. TIPP stands for:

1. Temperature: For example, splashing cold water on your face or holding an ice pack. This triggers the “dive reflex” by slowing the heart rate and calming the body 🧊

2. Intense Exercise: engage in 10-15 minutes of high-intensity activity, such as star jumps, sprinting or dancing. This helps release built up stress hormones 🏋🏻‍♀️

3. Paced Breathing: Breathe deeply and slowly into your belly. Exhale longer than you inhale (e.g., inhale 3 seconds, exhale 6 seconds) to lower heart rate and blood pressure 😮‍💨

4. Paired/progressive muscle relaxation: Tighten a muscle group (like shoulders or calves) for 5 seconds while breathing in, then abruptly release and relax while breathing out. Repeat through different muscle groups to release physical tension 💪
