🌿 MICROBIOME MONDAY: FORAGING FOR GUT HEALTH 🌿

Have you spotted the elderflowers blooming yet?

One of my favourite signs that summer is on its way is the arrival of elderflower season.
Last week I was busy making homemade elderflower cordial and elderflower champagne using freshly picked flowers and lemons. 🍋🌿

Seasonal foods and traditional recipes can encourage us to eat more diversely throughout the year, which is something our gut microbes tend to love. Different plant compounds provide different nutrients for our microbiome, helping to support a rich and varied gut ecosystem.

Elderflowers contain naturally occurring polyphenols and plant compounds that have been traditionally used for generations, while the simple act of foraging helps reconnect us with nature, seasonal eating and slowing down.

You don't need expensive superfoods to support your gut health. Sometimes it's as simple as:

🌿 Eating with the seasons
🌿 Trying new plant foods
🌿 Adding more variety to your plate
🌿 Spending time outdoors
🌿 Enjoying traditional homemade foods and drinks

Have you ever made elderflower cordial or elderflower champagne? I'd love to hear what seasonal foods you're enjoying right now.

*Little microbiome fact: Research suggests that people who regularly consume a wider variety of plant foods tend to have greater microbial diversity in the gut than those eating a limited range of foods. More variety often means more nourishment for different beneficial microbes. 🌱

I would love to welcome a practitioner whose services complement our existing team, helping us continue to offer a broad range of professional health and wellbeing services under one roof.

The room may particularly suit an established:

🌿 Clinic Closed Today – Learning Mode Activated! 🌿

Today the clinic is closed while I attend a Lymphoedema Study Day hosted by the British Lymphology Society (BLS).

As healthcare continues to evolve, I believe it's important to keep learning and developing so I can continue providing the best possible support to my clients.

Today's sessions are focused on: ✨ Lymphoedema assessment and management ✨ Compression garment and dressing options ✨ Prescription pathways ✨ Post-surgical support, including oncology clients

I'm particularly looking forward to learning more about compression suppliers and prescribing options that may benefit clients recovering from surgery, cancer treatment, and those living with lymphoedema.

☔ I arrived expecting a beautiful summer's day... instead I was greeted by rain, grey skies and very British weather! 😂

The clinic will be open as usual tomorrow.
📚 Investing in knowledge today to better support my clients tomorrow

Wellness Wednesday

🌿 Did you know we also offer Food Intolerance Testing at Total Gut Health & Wellness Centre?

If you struggle with bloating, skin flare-ups, fatigue, headaches or digestive discomfort, food intolerances may sometimes play a role in how you feel.

Food intolerance testing may help identify foods that could be contributing to symptoms and can be a useful starting point for a more personalised approach to nutrition and wellbeing.

✨ I have partnered with YorkTest Laboratories, one of the UK's most recognised food intolerance testing providers, to offer trusted home testing options alongside practitioner guidance and support.

People experiencing symptoms such as:

• Bloating & wind
• Abdominal discomfort
• Diarrhoea
• Headaches
• Fatigue & lethargy
• Skin concerns such as eczema, rashes, psoriasis & hives
• Anxiety or feeling "run down"
..may find testing useful as part of a wider health picture.

Importantly, food intolerance testing is just one piece of the puzzle. Results should always be considered alongside symptoms, medical history, lifestyle factors and, where appropriate, further investigation.

✨ Testing can be purchased as a standalone option or alongside a consultation to help guide your next steps.

Please note: Food intolerance testing is not the same as allergy testing and should not replace medical advice or prescribed treatment.

Microbiome Monday: Creamy Green Shakshuka

Looking for a delicious alternative to traditional tomato-based shakshuka?

This green version is packed with fibre, plant diversity and protein, making it a great option if you're avoiding tomatoes due to histamine intolerance, reflux, heartburn or digestive sensitivity.

💚 Comfort food that also happens to be microbiome-friendly.

What went in?
🧅 4 onions, slowly cooked until soft and sweet
🧄 4 cloves garlic
🫘 2 cartons butter beans (including the liquid)
🥣 150ml vegetable stock
🌿 4 tbsp basil pesto
Plus either: ✨ 2 tsp Chermoula spice blend (shop-bought is absolutely fine)
Or make your own:
🥬 1 bag spinach, finely sliced
🥥 300g coconut protein yoghurt (or crème fraîche if tolerated)
🥚 Eggs
Method
1️⃣ Slowly cook the onions until soft and caramelised.
2️⃣ Add the garlic and spices and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
3️⃣ Add the butter beans, bean liquid, vegetable stock and pesto.
4️⃣ Simmer gently for around 5 minutes.
5️⃣ Stir through the spinach until wilted.
6️⃣ Add the coconut yoghurt (or crème fraîche) and stir through until rich and creamy.
7️⃣ Make little wells in the mixture and crack in the eggs.
8️⃣ Pop the lid on and cook on a low heat until the egg whites are fully set but the yolks remain soft.

Serve with...
🥗 A fresh Lebanese-style salad
🥖 Warm pitta bread, ciabatta or sourdough
🥔 Roasted potatoes if you're feeling extra hungry

Why your microbiome may love it
✔ Fibre from butter beans, onions and spinach
✔ A wide range of plant compounds and polyphenols
✔ Protein from both the eggs and beans
✔ Healthy fats from pesto and eggs
✔ Lower-acid alternative for some people who find tomatoes aggravate reflux or heartburn
✔ Easy way to increase plant diversity without complicated cooking

🌱 Remember, there is no single "perfect" gut health meal. Consistency, variety and enjoyment of food are often more important than chasing perfection.

Support the person, not just the symptom.

Did you know scars can continue to affect the body long after they have healed?

Whether from cancer surgery, a C-section, joint replacement, abdominal surgery or injury, scar tissue can sometimes contribute to:

• Pain or discomfort
• Tightness and pulling sensations
• Reduced movement or flexibility
• Numbness or altered sensation
• Lymphatic congestion

As a Restore Scar Therapy Oncology Specialist, I offer gentle, evidence-informed scar therapy designed to support mobility, comfort and recovery.

Many clients are surprised to learn that even scars that are years old may still benefit from treatment.

Struggling with the heat?

Feeling bloated, swollen or “full of air” after a bout of heat exhaustion?

You’re not imagining it.

After overheating or dehydration, some people notice:
• bloating
• trapped wind
• sluggish bowels
• nausea
• feeling full quickly
• worsening IBS-type symptoms

This may happen because heat stress and dehydration can temporarily affect digestion, gut motility and the nervous system.

Sometimes during a flare, the gut responds better to calming, gentle support rather than overloading it with probiotics, raw foods or excessive fibre.

Things that may help support recovery:
🌿 electrolytes & hydration
🌿 fennel, peppermint or ginger tea
🌿 warm cooked meals
🌿 gentle movement after eating
🌿 smaller, simpler meals
🌿 temporary reduction in highly fermentable foods

At Total Gut Health I take an evidence-informed, medically-aware and holistic approach to digestive wellness 🌿
