A story I’ve wanted to share for a while now ❤️…

Sometimes a broken pair of glasses is a blessing in disguise… it may have just saved a life. 🙏✨

In 2023, someone very dear to me came into Dixon Optometry as he had clumsily broken his glasses (typical 🤦🏽‍♂️). He was a completely fit 42-year-old runner with a good diet… maybe noticed a few extra migraines, but nothing to concern him as he had them growing up for years.

Advanced retinal imaging and OCT scans revealed swollen optic discs (papilloedema). Knowing this can signal dangerous pressure around the brain, we issued an urgent hospital referral.

It turned out an underlying kidney issue was driving his blood pressure sky-high, causing fluid buildup around the brain. After treatment, his kidneys and blood pressure are under control.

A routine visit gave doctors the key evidence needed to catch a life-threatening issue earlier than any symptoms would have shown. Never compromise on your health… a thorough eye test checks far more than just your vision.

Seeing your eyes in more detail 👁️

Our Topcon MYAH provides detailed measurements that help our optometrists build a more complete picture of your eyes.

From mapping the shape and surface of the cornea, to measuring axial length and assessing tear-film stability, this technology can support the assessment and monitoring of different aspects of eye health.

🌕 The Solar Eclipse is almost here! 🌒

On Wednesday, August 12, the UK will experience a major solar eclipse. With over 90% of the Sun covered around 7:00 PM, it’s going to be a breathtaking sight...but you view it safely!

During the last major UK solar eclipse in 1999, eye clinics across the country treated around 70 people for solar retinopathy (solar maculopathy)—retinal burns caused by looking directly at the Sun or using improper filters.

Because retinal burns don't hurt at first, many didn't realize the damage was happening until hours later.

🛡️ 3 Essential Rules to Protect Your Eyes:
1️⃣ Ditch regular sunglasses
Even the darkest UV sunglasses only block a fraction of the intensity needed. Safe viewers are thousands of times darker.

2️⃣ Remember: Solar damage is painless
Your retina has no pain receptors. You won't feel a burn happening, which is why proper filters are non-negotiable.

3️⃣ Look for the ISO 12312-2 Standard
Only view the Sun through official, undamaged solar glasses certified to ISO 12312-2.

Scleral Lens Guide Part 2: AFTER REMOVAL 🌙✨ (Save this!)

Removing your scleral lenses at night? Here are the 2 Golden Rules to keep your eyes safe and your lenses pristine:

1️⃣ MeniCare Pure = CLEAN & SOAK 🧴
Always rub & clean your lens with MeniCare Pure solution after removal, then store it in FRESH solution overnight.

2️⃣ Saline = This is for Rinsing ONLY 💧
Saline is great for rinsing off solution before insertion, but NEVER soak your lenses in saline overnight! Saline contains no disinfectants to clean off bacteria.

⚠️ BONUS GOLDEN RULE: Never let tap water touch your lenses or case, and always let your lens case air-dry upside down during the day! 🌬️

If you’ve noticed I’ve been away from my usual clinic schedule recently, it was only temporary! I have been busy completing my Independent Prescribing training with the incredible team at Newmedica Manchester.

It was an incredible learning experience, and I'm so excited to bring these advanced skills back to my patients.

Huge gratitude to the amazing team and surgeons there.....special thanks to Vinod Sharma, George Mousa, and Jamie Young. Your guidance and expertise have been invaluable, and I look forward to continuing this fantastic clinical partnership in the future. 🙌

Its a sad day for me personally that this clinical placement has now ended as I enjoyed it so much.
