Dressability

Dressability Welcome! We believe that well-fitting, comfortable clothing should be accessible for every body.

We are the Swindon-based charity providing clothing adaptations and tailoring for people with disabilities, older people, and anyone with limited dexterity. Clothing comes in all shapes and sizes, but sometimes that is simply not enough! For people with physical disabilities, learning difficulties and the over 65's, finding clothes that reflect a personal style, fit well and are easy to take on or

off, can be hard. To make life easier Dressability provides a low cost clothing adaptation and alteration service to people who need their clothes to fit well, feel comfortable and remain stylish. Whatever physical challenges you face, Dressability can help tailor your clothing so that getting dressed or being dressed becomes an everyday routine rather than a daily problem! Dressability is one of only two independent clothing services in the UK which caters specifically for the needs of disabled people. We work with other voluntary organisations, disability support groups, social workers and healthcare professionals. Because of our experience of clothing and disability, our advice has also been sought by the legal profession. Dressability is a registered charity which has a board of trustees who are legally responsible for all the charityยดs activities.

A huge consignment of clothing has recently arrived at Dressability and our fantastic volunteers have been hard at work removing embroidered logos, ready to give these garments a new lease of life.

The donation has kindly been provided by Osnic Embroidery & Printing, a family run business established in 1991 that specialises in embroidered and printed workwear, teamwear and promotional clothing.

By carefully de-branding each item, our volunteers are helping prevent perfectly good clothing from going to waste while creating opportunities for it to be reused by people who need it most. It's a time consuming job, but one that has a real environmental and community impact.

A huge thank you to everyone at Osnic Embroidery & Printing for their incredibly generous donation, and to our amazing volunteers for taking on such a mammoth task.

Keep an eye out for the full story on BBC Points West this week!

A great photo from last week's SEND Coffee Morning. It was a pleasure for Corinna to represent Dressability, spending the morning meeting local families and connecting with fellow support organisations.

It was fantastic to be part of the SEND Coffee Morning, bringing together a wide range of organisations from across Swindon to support children and young people with SEND and their families. ๐Ÿ’™

It was wonderful to meet so many parents and carers, chat about the support available, and help connect them with services that can make a real difference for both themselves and their young people.

A big thank you to everyone who came along and to all the organisations involved in making the morning such a valuable opportunity to share information, build connections, and strengthen support within our community. Together, we're helping to ensure that no one has to navigate their journey alone. ๐ŸŒŸ

It was fantastic to see adaptive fashion take centre stage on last night's episode of The Great British Sewing Bee.

For the programme's very first Adaptive Week, the remaining sewers were challenged to create a beautifully pattern matched shell top designed by guest judge Victoria Jenkins, founder of Unhidden. An award winning adaptive fashion designer and disability advocate, Victoria is passionate about creating clothing that is both accessible and stylish, proving that people should never have to compromise one for the other.

At Dressability, we know that adaptive clothing is about so much more than alterations. It's about helping people feel comfortable, confident and able to wear clothes that work for their individual needs.

It was wonderful to see adaptive fashion showcased in such a positive way on one of the UK's best loved sewing programmes, helping to raise awareness of inclusive design and the difference it can make.

We've recently launched our Hospital Drain Bags project, creating discreet, reusable fabric bags to help people carry surgical drain bottles more comfortably and confidently during their recovery.

To help us continue making these, we're looking for donations of fabric.

If you have any good quality cotton fabric that you no longer need, we'd love to hear from you. Your unwanted fabric could be transformed into something that provides comfort, dignity and practical support for someone going through treatment or recovering from surgery.

If you'd like to donate fabric, please get in touch with us on 01793 512878 or email [email protected]

Thank you for helping us turn something you no longer need into something that can make a real difference to someone else.

We loved visiting the Live Well Swindon Project team, run by Swindon Borough Council.

They do an amazing job helping people improve their health, wellbeing and independence by connecting them with the right support and local services. It was wonderful to learn more about the difference they're making across Swindon and the many ways they help people every day.

We also enjoyed sharing how Dressability helps people in our community maintain their independence and confidence through clothing adaptations tailored to their individual needs.

Thank you for such a warm welcome. It was a pleasure to meet the team, and we look forward to keeping in touch.

If you or someone you know could benefit from our clothing adaptation service, we'd love to hear from you. Call us on 01793 512878 or email [email protected] to find out how we can help.

It was a pleasure to visit Headway Swindon recently and meet such a friendly and welcoming group.

We were inspired to learn more about the incredible work they do supporting people living with brain injuries, as well as their families and carers, helping them rebuild confidence, regain independence and improve their quality of life.

Visits like these are a fantastic opportunity to connect with local organisations, share ideas and raise awareness of the support available within our community.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone at Headway Swindon for making us feel so welcome.

Today we were pleased to welcome Dressability to Headway.

Dressability helps people with disabilities and long-term health conditions enjoy greater choice, comfort and independence in what they wear. Their team adapts clothing to suit individual needs, including challenges with fit, fastenings, fabrics and medical equipmentโ€”while keeping personal style at the heart of what they do.

Thank you for visiting and sharing more about the positive difference your work makes.

Before you pack it away or decide to replace it, it may be worth speaking to us first.

A simple alteration can often make clothing more comfortable to wear, whether that's adjusting the fit, adding a little extra room or making it easier to put on and take off. For many people with disabilities, limited mobility or changing health needs, these small changes can make a real difference during the warmer months.

Whether it's a favourite dress, a pair of shorts, lightweight trousers or a summer top, we may be able to help you enjoy wearing it again.

Choosing to alter clothing rather than replace it is also a great way to reduce textile waste and give much-loved garments a new lease of life.

If you have something in your wardrobe you'd love to wear again this summer, we'd be happy to see if we can help.

Call us on 01793 512878 or email [email protected] to find out more.

A huge thank you to the wonderful people from Zurich's Life Risk team, through by , who spent yesterday volunteering with us.

Working alongside Tia, they helped prepare our drain bag kits, from cutting fabric and sewing labels to assembling the finished bags ready for distribution. It was a busy day, and thanks to their enthusiasm and teamwork we were able to achieve so much.

These drain bag kits provide a simple but important way of helping people living with long-term medical conditions carry drainage bags more discreetly, comfortably and with greater dignity. They are just one example of how practical adaptations can make a real difference to everyday life.

Volunteering days like this don't just help us get more done, they allow us to reach more people who need our support.

Thank you once again to the lovely people from Zurich who gave up their time to help us. We really appreciate your support and hope you enjoyed your day with us.
