We’re celebrating the recent refurbishment of our Inpatient Unit 🎉

Thanks to a government grant for capital improvements, we’ve been able to make our Inpatient Unit even more welcoming, comfortable and accessible for patients and their families.

The updates include wider doorways to enable easier access to the patio for beds, a new wheelchair ramp at the main entrance, beautiful hand-painted murals, better storage, refreshed colour schemes, new flooring, improved single rooms with en-suites, and enhanced family areas.

These changes also help make the hospice more inclusive, supporting people with a range of needs – including those with mobility challenges, dementia, neurodiverse needs, or sensory sensitivities.

While this funding has helped improve our facilities, it’s ringfenced for buildings and equipment only, so we still rely on the amazing support of our local community to fund the care we provide every day.

This Volunteers’ Week, we’re continuing to celebrate the people who generously give their time to support Rowcroft Hospice.

Jane Watson volunteered in our Inpatient Unit for nearly ten years, where she saw the impact of compassionate care on patients and their loved ones every day. Jane later stepped back from her volunteering role to care for her own parents at home, during which time she experienced the support of the Hospice at Home Team.

“The team were wonderful – their care and support was second to none,” shared Jane. “I witnessed the care, the commitment, the love, the compassion and support from all the Rowcroft staff.”

Jane continues to support Rowcroft whenever she can, from event marshalling to fundraising. She recently took part in our Every Moment Matters Appeal as a Charity Champion, describing it as a truly special experience.

We’re so grateful for the kindness and support our volunteers bring to Rowcroft in so many different ways.

As Volunteers’ Week continues, we’re shining a light on the amazing people who support Rowcroft Hospice across our charity shops.

One example is the volunteer team at our St Marychurch shop, who have become good friends while welcoming customers, sorting donations, and keeping the shelves and rails well stocked.

Susan Hinchcliffe, one of the volunteers at St Marychurch, says: “I have always found volunteering amazingly rewarding. The best part about my role is meeting people and being part of a great team. Being retired it’s been a wonderful way to make friends – both with other volunteers and customers.”

The team’s friendly approach helps make the shop such a welcoming place for the local community.

We’re so grateful to our retail volunteers across all our shops, whose time and care help raise vital funds to support local people living with life-limiting illnesses.

For almost 40 years, Pat Goss has been an incredible part of the Rowcroft family.

This Volunteers’ Week, we’re saying a big thank you to Pat and every volunteer who gives their time and compassion to support our community.

Pat began volunteering with Rowcroft in the early 1980s, becoming a Friend of Rowcroft before taking on the role of Chair in 2008. Over the decades, she has helped raise awareness of the hospice across South Devon, organising events and raising vital funds. Since Pat became Chair, Friends of Rowcroft have raised an incredible ÂŁ864,000 for compassionate end-of-life care. In recognition of her dedication, Pat received the prestigious Order of Mercy Award in 2023 for exceptional voluntary service in the field of care.

“Volunteers are so important,” Pat shared. “Rowcroft supports patients and their loved ones in so many ways that people often don’t see or realise, which means there are lots of different ways people can get involved and make a difference. I always say I feel privileged to have this connection with Rowcroft. It’s been such an incredible experience.”

We’re so grateful to our wonderful community of volunteers, who go above and beyond every day to help make compassionate care possible across South Devon.

This Volunteers’ Week, we’re celebrating the incredible people who give their time and care to support Rowcroft.

For over eight years, Nick Coffey has been a dedicated volunteer with Rowcroft Hospice as part of the Bereavement Support Team. Nick’s role involves supporting people who have lost loved ones, offering one-to-one grief support. He also helps facilitate our nature-based support group, Spaces in Nature.

“I am proud to be part of a huge team of wonderful volunteers at the hospice,” shared Nick. “On a personal level, this is by far the best job I have ever done.”

We’re immensely grateful to Nick and all our volunteers, whose kindness and commitment help Rowcroft continue to offer compassionate support to those who need it in our community.
