Every to-do list has a few zombie tasks.

The ones that never get done and never quite die. You cross them off this weekโ€™s list and write them onto next weekโ€™s. They shuffle back every Monday, a little heavier each time.

For business owners with ADHD, zombie tasks are often the boring ones. The invoice chasing. The admin. The form that needs one bit of information you donโ€™t have to hand. It isnโ€™t that theyโ€™re hard. Itโ€™s that they give your brain nothing to grab onto, so it keeps sliding off them
And every time one comes back, it brings guilt with it. So this weekend, pick one zombie task and decide its fate:

๐ŸŽƒ Do it. Make the first step tiny. Not โ€œsort the accountsโ€. โ€œOpen the spreadsheet.โ€
๐ŸŽƒ Hand it over. If itโ€™s been on your list for a month, it might not be yours to do. Delegate
it to someone else.
๐ŸŽƒ Bury it properly. Some tasks keep coming back because they never really mattered.
Youโ€™re allowed to let them go.

You donโ€™t need more willpower. You need fewer zombies.

Whatโ€™s haunting you?

Do you have emails, tasks, conversations hanging around that you just can't do?

These unanswered emails, decision you put off, the conversation you really need to have are taking up space in your head, even after you've stopped working. It's not the big things that haunt business owners, it's the unfinished ones.

I worked with a client who struggled to complete the last 5% of a task, she kept putting it off because then she was committed to share the proposal and that made her feel vulnerable, judged. She worried that she might have made a mistake. It worried her, made her anxious and the longer she put it off the more the anxiety grew. It was taking up too much space in her head.

I talked to her about the 'Eat the frog' method as outlined in Eat the Frog by Brian Tracy, where he outlines 21 ways to stop procrastinating and get things done.

The method we talked about is doing the hardest task first each day. When planning your tasks for the day (if you do that? And if you don't we need to chat!) you identify the 1 task that you really need to do but you don't want to do it. Perhaps it makes you feel uncomfortable, it's going to upset someone, it's going to take too long. Whatever it is you need to do it first. It becomes your top priority and you do it before you do anything else.
And once it's done you'll feel great!

It worked for my client, and it could work for you to clear what haunts your thoughts.

Is what you say yes to when you should say no is silently running your week?

Working in education meant that my day was controlled by time, I monitored time constantly through the day. Is it time to let the children in? is it time for assembly? Is it lunchtime? So when I left education I thought I'm not going to watch time, I'll do things when I'm ready.

It was a complete disaster! Nothing happened, I didn't achieve anything. I procrastinated for hours. What I learned was that I need to include boundaries in my day. Time boundaries, priorities and set out what I need to achieve in the time I had available.

I rebelled against having boundaries but what I discovered is that we actually need boundaries to help us keep things in check. For me it was time boundaries, I have set working hours and a realistic list to tasks to achieve in that time.

But it could be that your boundaries relate to how many times you say yes, realistically how many clients can you manage effectively, how many projects can you juggle at once, should you attend another network meeting this week?

Boundaries aren't there to be difficult or restrictive. They're about protecting the hours and energy that actually move your business forward.

What boundaries do you need to put in place?

Today I want to introduce The Reset for Men โ€” a new coaching programme for men.

It's for men at a crossroads who want to get their head straight. Maybe that's redundancy, retirement, separation, bereavement, a health scare, or a job that's lost its point. Or maybe nothing's "wrong" exactly โ€” you just know something needs to change.

Three sessions. No jargon. No lectures.

โœ” Review โ€” where are you, really?
โœ” Rethink โ€” what do you actually want?
โœ” Rebuild โ€” what's the plan?

In person, online, or out for a walk if that's easier.

Reach out to me and let's book in a free 30-minute discovery call to discuss how I can help. No pressure, no pitch.

You're not stuck. You're just too close to it.

It's the line that comes up in almost every first conversation I have with a new client โ€” usually right before they realise it's true for them too.

I've pulled together the five signs I see most often: the quiet clues that you've lost a bit of perspective on your own life, without even noticing it happening.

It's a free download. No catch, just a way to check whether it's you, or are you overloaded.

I spent a lovely 2 hours on the allotment on Sunday harvesting my vegetables. I collected 3 bags of tomatoes, 1 bag of chillies, 4 squash, leeks, carrots, cabbage, broccoli and a mangel-wurzel .

Weโ€™re well into October and the vegetables are still coming, especially the tomatoes. All that watering over the summer is paying off now.

And it got me thinking about business.

Nobody sees the watering. Itโ€™s not exciting. It doesnโ€™t feel productive. Some evenings it feels like youโ€™re doing it for nothing.

Business is the same. The follow-up emails. The posts that get three likes. The networking conversations that donโ€™t turn into anything straight away. Itโ€™s easy to wonder whether any of it is working.

Then one day youโ€™re harvesting in October and wondering where it all came from.

It didnโ€™t come from nowhere. It came from turning up consistently when there was nothing to show for it.

If youโ€™re in a season where youโ€™re putting the work in and not seeing results yet, youโ€™re not behind. Youโ€™re in the watering bit. The harvest will come in the future.

Your business should support your life, not take it over!

If you're:
constantly "on,"
constantly deciding,
constantly carrying the workload

That's not just tiredness. That's a business that's stopped supporting your life.

As a business owner you are allowed to take a step back. By stepping back you are not giving up you are allowing yourself time and distance to see clearly enough so you can work out what to do to move forward.

I can help you do this, I can guide you through a process of reflection. Business owners are often too close to be able to see the problem clearly, I can help give you perspective and space to focus on what is needed next.

Have you ever held a whole business strategy in your head, then completely forgotten to reply to one email?

October is ADHD Awareness Month. Let's talk about what ADHD can actually feel like when you're running a business.

๐Ÿ“Œ It's having seventeen ideas before breakfast and no way of knowing which one matters most.

๐Ÿ“Œ It's a task that should take you no more than an hour but ends up taking all day. Or worse, it's doesn't happening at all.

๐Ÿ“Œ It's working in bursts of brilliant focus, then hitting a wall you can't explain and can't do anything.

๐Ÿ“Œ It's knowing exactly what needs doing, and still not being able to get started.

๐Ÿ“Œ It's years of wondering why things that seem easy for everyone else feel so hard for you.

And sadly it's the quiet voice in your head that says you should be doing better by now.

My message to you in this awareness this month is stop beating yourself up. What you are struggling with isn't a discipline problem. It definitely isn't laziness. It's just that your brain is wired differently.

You don't need another planner, another app, or another system built for someone else's brain. You need a way of working that is bespoke for you, that fits how you actually think.

That's the work I do with ADHD business owners and professionals. We start with you, how your ADHD shows up in your work, and we build from there. No judgement. No one size fits all. Together we build a system that will work for you.

What is the one thing you would most like to feel easier, run smoothly, be less stressful. Book a free ADHD discovery call with me and let's start to think about how I can make things easier for you.

Having just had a week away, it was a good reminder of something I say to clients all the time: if your business can't survive you stepping back for a few days, that's not a resilient business. That's a fragile one wearing a busy disguise.

Sometimes we get caught in the busy, busy busy cycle, where we feel we have to be busy all the time. Fill the diary with meetings, take on more work, but actually having a busy day does't mean it's an effective day.

Look back at your diary for last week: how many meetings did you attend? How many moved your business forward? How many hours did you work? Then look at how much work you completed. How effective were you last week?

When you started your business, was your goal to build something you can never leave. Many business owners set up their own companies because they want the freedom and flexibility they think it will give them.

The goal was to build something that supports the life you actually want โ€” including the weeks you switch off completely. Remember being busy isn't the same as being effective.

This is me doing my first Parkrun for 5 months after a long recovery from pneumonia.

I was determined and motivated to get back to running. At my hospital appointment where I was told I had pneumonia the consultant explained that if I hadn't been fit and healthy I would have been admitted to hospital. That conversation has stayed with me and gave me the determination to regain that level of fitness.

Having to rest for 3 months had taken its told on my ability to walk let alone run. I began a simple routine of walking every day, I was able to build up the distance and pace, then I started running, slowly at first over short distances. It was incredibly satisfying to be able to complete Parkrun again. I admit I did walk at some points but I completed it.

I have since completed 3 Parkruns, I'm not back at the pace I was and I still have to walk at times, as my lungs are still healing, but I'm improving.

Often business owners try to run before they can walk. They try to do everything at once, bite off more than they can chew and lots of other cliches. But if you start small and build the habit you get the result, but also feel stronger and more confident.

Getting a clear perspective on what you want to achieve is vital to growing your business.

if you would like some help to get clear on where you are going, book a discovery call and let's plan your next steps.
