Bonfire Night is just a few weeks away. A few simple steps can keep your display safe as well as fun. 🔥

If you're running a home or community display:

• Keep spectators well back, behind a clear boundary
• Light fireworks at arm's length with a taper, then stand well back
• Never go back to a firework that has gone off. Leave it for at least 15 minutes, then douse it in water
• Keep fireworks in a closed box, well away from children
• Keep a bucket of water or a hose close by

Sparklers burn at very high temperatures. Give them to children over five only, one at a time, with gloves on, and put used ones straight into a bucket of water or sand.

If someone is burned: cool the burn under cool running water for 20 minutes, remove jewellery and tight clothing gently, then cover with cling film or a clean, non-fluffy dressing. Don't use ice, creams or butter. Call 999 for any burn larger than the person's hand, or on the face, hands, feet or joints.

Want to feel more confident responding to burns and other everyday emergencies? Our First Aid at Work and First Aid at Home courses are practical, friendly and built around real situations.

When help is an hour away, the first responder matters.

In remote areas, there may be no quick ambulance arrival. Knowing how to assess an incident, keep someone safe and manage problems such as hypothermia can make a real difference, especially as the weather turns colder.

Our Outdoor First Aid course focuses on realistic, hands-on scenarios rather than theory alone, helping you build the confidence to respond in outdoor environments.

Suitable for outdoor instructors, activity leaders, campsite and countryside staff, surf schools and outdoor businesses.

Is your first aid certificate still in date?

Workplace first aid certificates are valid for three years, so it’s worth checking the expiry dates for your team. If a renewal is coming up, our First Aid at Work Refresher course is here to help. We can also deliver on-site training for groups of 4 or more across Cornwall.

Winter bugs can spread quickly through nurseries, schools and workplaces. A few practical steps can help slow them down.

Norovirus often starts suddenly, with vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach cramps and feeling unwell. If someone becomes ill on site, keep others away from the affected area and help them get home safely. Clean and disinfect contaminated areas and frequently touched surfaces promptly, following product instructions and wearing disposable gloves. Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water: hand sanitiser alone isn’t reliable against norovirus.

Keep children and staff off nursery, school or work until at least 48 hours after vomiting and diarrhoea have stopped. That extra time helps reduce the risk of passing it on.

Heading to the coast this autumn? 🌊

Colder water can trigger cold water shock, causing an involuntary gasp, rapid breathing and panic. Autumn swells and changing conditions can also make familiar launch points and beaches more challenging than expected.

Before heading out:
• Check the weather, tides and swell
• Wear the right buoyancy aid and cold-water kit
• Tell someone your plans and know your exit points
• Stay with your group and keep a means of calling for help accessible
• Never enter the water to attempt a rescue unless you’re trained and equipped

If you’re in trouble in the water, try to float, keep your airway clear and call 999. If you see someone else in danger, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard : don’t put yourself at risk.

For watersport clubs, gig clubs, surf schools, outdoor workers and beachgoers, practical first aid training can make a real difference when conditions change quickly.

Our Outdoor First Aid course is on Monday 28 September 2026: one practical day, £110, with a 3-year qualification. We can also deliver tailored on-site training for groups of four or more.

Message First Aid Cornwall to find out more. Stay prepared, look out for each other and enjoy the coast safely. 💚

Could your AED be ready to use right now? Take 60 seconds to check. ⏱️

□ Does the status indicator show that the AED is ready?
□ Are the battery and electrode pads within their expiry dates?
□ Are the AED, pads and accessories present, sealed where appropriate and undamaged?
□ Is the cabinet easy to reach, unlocked or accessible, and free from obstructions?
□ Are the AED signs clear, and are the location details still correct?
□ Is the device registered on The Circuit, with up-to-date contact and access information?

Record the check and arrange replacement supplies promptly if anything is missing, damaged or out of date. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions, and remember that routine checks don’t replace formal servicing or maintenance.

First Aid Cornwall supplies AEDs and provides practical CPR and AED training to help workplaces, schools, clubs and community venues feel ready to respond.

Where should your AED live? 📍

For workplaces, schools, clubs and community venues, the right placement can make a real difference when minutes matter.

Use this checklist:

✅ Easy to find, with clear AED signage
✅ Accessible day and night where possible
✅ Unobstructed : never hidden away or made difficult to reach
✅ Close to the areas where it’s most likely to be needed
✅ Within about a 2-minute brisk walk where appropriate, based on a site-specific risk assessment
✅ Known by staff, volunteers, pupils and regular users

Also remember to:

• Register your AED on The Circuit, so 999 call handlers can help emergency services locate it.
• Carry out regular readiness checks, including the battery, pads and cabinet status.

A well-placed AED helps people start treatment quickly while emergency services are on their way.
