January can be a tough time of year to navigate.
Society is telling us we need to increase the pace and go up a gear, whereas biologically the body’s reaction to the darker colder months is prompting us to want to slow down. Mood regulating serotonin drops, the “sleep hormone” melatonin increases and the result is mood shifts and reduced energy.
Instead of fighting this process, allow yourself to slow down if you feel the need. Show yourself some compassion and understanding when feeling tired and lethargic because what you are experiencing is a normal reaction to the change in day light and the aftermath of the Christmas and New Year celebrations.
Several years ago, a valued friend and colleague of mine described January as the perfect time for reflection and I agree with his sentiments. Every year I remember his words and I follow his ritual of powerful reflective practice:
- What was important to me last year?
- What did I learn?
- What do I want to take forward into the new year?
- What do I want to leave behind?
Instead of diving into unrealistic and unsustainable new years resolutions, take time out to reflect, set yourself smaller, realistic goals and show yourself some understanding if you want to slow down in January and just “get through it”. Your experience is normal and perfectly OK.
