🎉 Today marks a very special milestone as we celebrate 2 years of Deborah Mitchell Independent Funeral Services. 🎉

I would like to take this opportunity to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone who has supported my business over the past two years. Whether you have entrusted me with the care of a loved one, recommended my services, shared kind words, or simply supported me along the way, I am truly grateful.

Starting and growing an independent funeral service has been an incredible journey, and I could not have achieved this without the support of our local community. A special thank you goes to the wonderful people of Columbia and the surrounding areas in Washington for welcoming and supporting us from the very beginning.

It has been a privilege to serve families during some of life's most difficult moments, and I am honoured by the trust that has been placed in me.

Thank you for being part of this journey. Here's to the next chapter and continuing to provide compassionate, personal care to the families we serve.

With sincere gratitude,

Deborah Mitchell

Where did it all start?

With an idea, a dream, and a passion to become a funeral director.

This Saturday, I will be celebrating two years in business, and I honestly can't believe how quickly things have changed. What started as a vision has grown into something I am incredibly proud of. Along the way, I've had the privilege of supporting so many families during some of the most difficult times in their lives, and for that, I am truly grateful.

Building Deborah Mitchell Independent Funeral Services has been one of the biggest challenges and greatest achievements of my life. There have been highs, lows, lessons learned, and moments I never imagined possible.

If there's one thing these past two years have taught me, it's this: if you think you can do it, you can. Believe in yourself, work hard, stay passionate, and don't be afraid to take that first step.

Thank you to everyone who has supported me, trusted me, and been part of this journey. Here's to two years of Deborah Mitchell Independent Funeral Services and whatever comes next. ❤️

Funeral Traditions continued

Origins of the hearse

Did you know the traditional hearse has origins that stretch back to medieval Europe? The word hearse originally referred to a decorative framework placed over a coffin, often with candles, and comes from the Old French herse, meaning a harrow.

Over time, the meaning evolved, and by the 1600s it began to refer to the vehicle used to carry the deceased to their final resting place.

Horse-drawn hearses later became part of funeral tradition, carrying a sense of dignity, respect and ceremony that continues today.

At Deborah Mitchell Independent Funeral Services, we honour those long-standing traditions while supporting families with compassion and care.

Why do we bow to the person who has passed away?

Bowing to someone who has passed away is a tradition found in many cultures around the world. It is often seen as a final gesture of respect, honour, and gratitude — a quiet moment to acknowledge the life that has been lived.

For some, it is a sign of farewell. For others, it reflects humility, remembrance, or spiritual belief. Whether it’s a slight nod of the head or a deeper bow, the gesture carries deep meaning without the need for words.

Funeral traditions may differ from family to family, but at the heart of them all is the same intention: showing love and respect to someone dearly missed.

At Deborah Mitchell Independent Funeral Services, we understand how personal these moments can be, and we are here to support every family in creating a farewell that feels right for them. ❤️

Why do funeral directors page (lead the cortège) in front of the hearse?

Paging is an age-old custom going back to the era of horse-drawn carriages. The funeral director walked ahead to regulate the pace, clear the path of obstacles, and guide the horses safely.

Today, we continue this tradition. Paging at the front of a funeral procession serves as a profound visual sign of respect for the deceased, serving as a visual gesture of leadership, symbolically clearing the path and accompanying the deceased on their final journey with dignity.

It is our honour and privilege to lead your loved one from the very first step of their final journey, paging your loved one from the place that meant the most — their own home at a pace that matches the gravity of the occasion.

Walking ahead warns onlookers and traffic that a funeral cortege is approaching, encouraging them to pause, stop, or remove their hats as a sign of respect.

We are privileged to provide our final act of care as we approach your loved one’s final destination. We once again go to the front and lead the procession forward with the cortège following closely behind to the place where we will say our final goodbye.

Paging isn’t exclusive to funeral directors. At Deborah Mitchell Independent Funeral Services, we ask families if they wish to share this privilege with us.

It’s one of the many thoughtful details we carefully consider to provide a respectful and caring service for every family we support. 🤍
