It's World Spine Day, so we're challenging one of the most common beliefs about looking after your back - posture!
"Sit up straight", "Stop slouching!" and "Perfect Posture"... But the evidence tells us something a little different: There isn't one perfect posture that prevents back pain.
Our spines are strong, adaptable structures designed to move in lots of different ways. Sitting, bending or slouching doesn't automatically mean we're causing damage. That's not to say your position never matters. If you're experiencing back pain, certain positions might feel more comfortable than others, and spending a long time in one position can aggravate symptoms.
So, rather than worrying about sitting perfectly, try changing positions regularly, finding what feels comfortable and keeping active in ways that work for you.
And if back pain is stopping you doing the things you enjoy, physiotherapy can help you understand what's contributing to your symptoms and develop a plan to get moving with confidence.
This World Spine Day, remember: your spine is made to move.
