Your customer's diesel van thinks it's an electric vehicle. Where would you start?

That's one of the problems we encountered with a Ford Transit Connect in the workshop.

The infotainment system was showing completely incorrect vehicle information, the Bluetooth instructions were in another language and an emergency assistance warning wouldn't disappear.

It’s not exactly the kind of fault you want to spend hours chasing.

We decided to investigate it using both an aftermarket diagnostic tool and genuine Ford dealer diagnostics.

The interesting part wasn't just what each tool could access, but the different routes available when trying to resolve the same problem.

JLR diagnostics is not just one tool anymore

When it comes to Jaguar Land Rover, you’re not just choosing one tool and cracking on.

You’ve got
- different software
- different VCIs
- different vehicle ages
- different access routes
- different subscriptions
depending on what you’re actually trying to do.

Older Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles generally sit in the SDD era, using Symptom Driven Diagnostics with the correct JLR VCI.

Then you’ve got the short-lived Pathfinder setup, which was introduced for newer vehicles around 2018 onwards but has since been superseded.

Now, for current JLR diagnostics, the main platform is TOPIx Cloud, which is browser-based, much lighter to run and automatically kept up to date when you log in.

Then there’s the legacy side with T4H for much older vehicles, plus additional equipment like the IDU2 if you’re getting into more advanced non-intrusive testing.

So before a workshop asks, “which JLR tool do I need?” the better question is:
what age vehicles are you seeing, and what level of work do you want to carry out?

Because servicing, fault diagnostics, programming, coding, key work and security-related modules can all change what you need.
