With Su***de - We Need a New Lens
The “International Handbook of Su***de Prevention” suggests that “we need to move beyond the medical model” as we explore new ways of dealing with su***de as a very real human phenomenon. We have been doing that for some time. Su***de is not in the realm of scientific enquiry. It is the realm of our everyday humanity.

Su***de is not just about a medical disorder. It is about what is behind the medical disorder. Why was somebody depressed - or schizophrenic, or bipolar? Why was somebody addicted? What is behind transgenerational poverty and exclusion?

Our work with families touched by su***de strongly suggests that we may need to look beyond the presenting “conditions” as we study su***de as a human phenomenon. Very ordinary people in very ordinary families take their own lives. The real experts on su***de are those families who have lived through it,. Their voices need to be heard. We need to listen.
