Providing midwifery care to women, their babies and families in the North-East since 2004

The MLU is a unit within the maternity department of OLOL, Drogheda which is managed and run by midwives. We provide antenatal care (in conjunction with GPs), labour, birth and postnatal care to healthy pregnant women. We run monthly antenatal education sessions which promote and support active birthing practices, baby care and breastfeeding. Midwives can recognise problems and refer mothers and/or babies to hospital doctors if the need arises.

What a fantastic response to the first of our two workshops at the ICM Conference!

Our midwives from OLOL Drogheda were delighted to deliver the first of two workshops at the ICM Conference, titled ‘Calm in the Chaos’

The session explored how skills drills can transform postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) outcomes through effective teamwork, communication and preparation. It was wonderful to see the room filled to capacity, with such enthusiastic participation, discussion and engagement throughout 🗣️

Thank you to everyone who attended, shared their experiences and contributed to the interactive learning. The positive feedback received highlights the importance of practising together, communicating clearly and supporting one another to provide the safest possible care for women and families 🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒

This week, a group of our wonderful midwives from Drogheda are proudly representing our hospital at the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) Triennial Congress in Lisbon, Portugal.

The ICM is a global organisation that brings together midwives and midwifery associations from around the world, with a shared vision of strengthening the profession and improving the health and wellbeing of women, babies and families through quality midwifery care. Held every three years, the ICM Congress is one of the largest international gatherings of midwives, providing an opportunity to share knowledge, showcase innovation, inspire one another and shape the future of maternity care.

We are incredibly proud that our team represents the largest Irish delegation at this year's Congress. Our Drogheda midwives are showcasing not one, but three Quality Improvement projects, highlighting the dedication, innovation and excellence within our service. They are also facilitating two workshops, sharing their expertise and learning with colleagues from across the globe.

This is a fantastic achievement and a testament to the passion, leadership and commitment of our midwives to continually improving care for women and families.

We wish our colleagues every success in Lisbon and look forward to bringing home new ideas, connections and inspiration to continue enhancing the care we provide here in Drogheda.
