Introducing

We’re delighted to welcome Professor O’Reilly to the Institute of Dermatologists.

Professor O’Reilly is a urogynaecologist and pelvic floor surgeon specialising in reconstructive, robotic and cosmetic gynaecology, bringing a new area of specialist women’s healthcare to the Institute.

From pelvic floor concerns to symptoms that can affect comfort, confidence and quality of life, many women live with issues they may feel embarrassed to discuss - or simply assume they have to put up with.

We’ll also be opening up our Stories for your questions. If there’s something you’ve always wanted to ask about pelvic floor or gynaecological health, you can submit your question anonymously for Professor O’Reilly to answer.

Professor O’Reilly is now available for consultations at the Institute. Book a consultation by phone or email.

✨ Ask ID: “How soon after getting a second ear piercing can I have earlobe filler?”

If you’re considering earlobe filler after a new piercing, allowing the area to heal first is important.

As a general guide, we’d recommend waiting at least six weeks after the piercing before considering treatment, with the area assessed beforehand to ensure it has healed appropriately.

💉 Why earlobe filler?

Over time, earlobes can lose volume and appear thinner or more deflated. Piercings and heavier earrings can also make these changes more noticeable.

Carefully placed dermal filler can help restore volume and support to the earlobe, with results that can be seen immediately.

Considering earlobe filler? Book an appointment with our Cosmetic Suite team.

🩺 Dermatologists React: Bethenny Frankel’s holiday skin reaction

Do you really need to start packing your own towels every time you stay in a hotel? 🧳

After Bethenny Frankel shared the facial eruption she and her daughter experienced while travelling, speculation turned to hotel towels and bacteria.

But Professor Caitriona Ryan isn’t convinced.

While towels can harbour bacteria, hotel laundry is typically washed at very high temperatures. And with both Bethenny and her daughter experiencing a similar eruption confined to their faces, there could be other explanations worth considering.

One possibility? A contact dermatitis - a reaction to something the skin has come into contact with, particularly if there's’a product or exposure that's’different while travelling.

The takeaway: when a rash suddenly appears, don't ’utomatically assume the most obvious culprit is responsible.

And no, you don’t need to start making room for your own towels in your suitcase. ✈️

Has your skin started to notice the change in season? 🍂

Cooler temperatures, drier air and indoor heating can all contribute to moisture loss, leaving skin feeling drier, tighter or more sensitive than it did during summer.

As we move into autumn, consider introducing richer, barrier-supportive hydration to help keep your skin comfortable and hydrated.

❌ The myth

”Korean skincare is better than medical skincare.”

Korean skincare, often referred to as K-beauty, describes skincare products and routines originating from South Korea, often associated with multi-step routines, innovative formulations and a strong focus on hydration and skin barrier support.

Its popularity has grown significantly in recent years, driven in part by social media, global beauty trends and the rise of Korean beauty brands internationally.

✅ The reality

Neither Korean nor medical skincare is universally "better.”

Korean skincare often focuses on hydration, barrier support and prevention, while medical skincare may contain higher-strength active ingredients designed to target specific skin concerns.

🧬 Which should you choose?

The best routine depends on your skin type, individual concerns and treatment goals, rather than where a product was developed or which skincare trend it belongs to.

🌿 Final word

Good skincare is about choosing well-formulated products that are right for your skin, not following labels or trends.

💬 The question

“My 9-year-old son has very reactive skin with small bumps and dryness. Do you have any tips?”

✅ The answer

Reactive skin in children is very common and is often caused by dry skin or mild eczema.

The priority is to restore and protect the skin barrier, helping the skin retain moisture and become less sensitive over time.

🧬 How can you support the skin barrier?

Choose gentle, fragrance-free cleansers and moisturisers containing ingredients such as ceramides and lipids to help replenish the skin.

Applying an emollient regularly, especially after bathing, can make a significant difference.

🌿 Final word

If your child's sk’n remains itchy, uncomfortable or isn't im’roving with regular moisturising, it’s worth speaking to your GP or dermatologist for further assessment.

🧪 The ID Ingredient Edit

This week’s ingredient: Copper Peptides

Copper peptides are signalling molecules that help support skin repair and collagen production, making them a popular ingredient in healthy ageing skincare.

✨ Why do dermatologists recommend them?

✔ Supports collagen production

✔ Helps improve skin firmness

✔ Promotes healthier-looking skin

✔ Suitable for mature or ageing skin

🌿 Final word

Healthy ageing isn’t about one miracle ingredient. Copper peptides work best as part of a consistent skincare routine.
