Have you heard of the Orphan Train Movement? Between 1854ā€“1929, more than 200,000 East-coast children were sent by rail to new homes across the American Midwest and West. Some were true orphans; many had living parents facing poverty or crisis. Placements ranged from loving foster families to harsh ā€œfree labourā€ situations.

Today, their descendants are using records and DNA to reconnect to birth families -and to the Irish, German, and other roots many of these children carried with them.

From a 13-year-old art student on Parliament Street to a wine-merchant in Clontarf, Archibald Christieā€™s path traces talent, trade, and family threads across Dublin.

Archibald Christie was the son of a china-and-glass dealer, briefly trained in art, married in Cork, later became an accountant and then a wine-merchant; his children kept the creative spark - winning medals at the Feis Ceoil and singing on Dublin stages.

His fatherā€™s story reaches further still, to the Moravian community of Gracehill, Co. Antrim, showing how a single line in a school register can open a whole landscape of places, professions, and voices.
