An early pregnancy scan is available from 6 weeks — though there's often a good reason to wait a little longer.

We offer early scans from 6 to 17 weeks, and we often recommend leaving it until after 7 weeks where possible, because at that stage we can normally get more accurate information.

The scan checks for a fetal heart, looks for multiples, checks where the pregnancy is located, and calculates gestational age and your estimated date of delivery.

A full bladder is needed. In very early pregnancy it is often necessary to perform a transvaginal scan, which gives a much clearer and enhanced view — your sonographer will explain and ask your permission before proceeding.

Sometimes it is simply too early to confirm whether a pregnancy is ongoing. If that happens we will recommend rescanning in 7–10 days rather than drawing a conclusion on the day.

No referral is required for pregnancy scans, and we are open to all patients — not only those attending the National Maternity Hospital.

At 11 weeks pregnant, your baby is about the size of a fig or a large strawberry, measuring roughly 1.5 to 1.6 inches (4 to 5 cm) long from crown to rump and weighing about 0.25 ounces (7 to 8 grams)

Your baby is actively stretching, rolling, and moving inside the womb, though you cannot feel it yet.

Fingers and toes have completely separated, and tiny nail beds are forming.

Pregnancy Diary Week 10: How Is Your Baby Growing?

Baby’s size is like a fig or a small plum. Baby is approximately 4 grams in weight now. The baby has grown substantially since the time of conception but it doesn’t show on your body just yet.

By this week, the baby’s body plan has almost been completed. The tail has completely disappeared and his fingers and toes are now separated. The heart is completely developed and the brain produces around a quarter of a million neurons every minute.

Medically Led Consultant Collaboration

Merrion Ultrasound is an ultrasound clinic in Dublin 2, which is a medical collaboration between five consultants.

The clinic is led by the following consultants: Dr Peter McParland (non-clinical), Dr Stephen Carroll, Professor Fionnuala McAuliffe, Professor Shane Higgins and Dr Rhona Mahony.

All are Consultant Obstetrician Gynaecologists with specialist training in Fetal Medicine, based at the National Maternity Hospital, Dublin.

Sonographer Midwife Led

The clinic is midwife/sonographer-led, headed by Sarah Madden, who is the Midwife Manager and Lead Sonographer.

The team are fully trained, qualified, and experienced.
