If you’ve started pulling your jawline back in the mirror to see what it used to look like, this one’s for you 👀

Changes through the lower face are incredibly common as we get older, but “my jawline has disappeared” doesn’t tell us what treatment you need.

Several things can happen at once. Skin becomes less firm, collagen changes, facial volume and support alter, and tissues can begin to descend.

That’s why simply adding filler to the lower face or booking the latest tightening treatment doesn’t necessarily give you the result you’re imagining.

For someone with earlier changes, we might look at treatments to improve firmness and collagen, support skin quality and selectively address areas where structural support has changed.

But there’s also an important conversation to have about what non-surgical treatments cannot do. They can improve, refine and support, but they can’t reproduce what a surgical facelift physically does.

If you’re noticing jowling, a softer jawline, or lower-face laxity but surgery isn’t where you’re at, book a consultation at The Skin Lab. We’ll talk you through what could genuinely make a difference and what’s realistic for your face. Tap the link in our bio to get started 🤍

Your skincare routine after 40 doesn’t need 12 steps, but there are a few ingredients we don’t want to skip. 👀

As we move through our 40s and 50s, changes in collagen production, cell turnover and accumulated sun damage become more noticeable. You might start seeing more pigmentation, fine lines, uneven texture or skin that doesn’t have quite the same radiance it used to.

This is where choosing the right active ingredients can make a real difference.

✨️ Vitamin C is one of our favourites for morning use. It’s a powerful antioxidant that helps protect against environmental oxidative stress, supports collagen production and can improve the appearance of pigmentation and uneven tone.

✨️ Tretinoin is another ingredient we rate incredibly highly. It’s a prescription strength form of vitamin A with decades of clinical evidence behind it, particularly for improving fine lines, skin texture and signs of sun damage.

✨️ Then there’s exfoliation. A carefully chosen acid can help improve dullness, rough texture and uneven tone. At The Skin Lab, one product we love is Obagi Exfoderm Forte, which contains glycolic and lactic acids.

But here’s where we’d be careful. More active ingredients don’t automatically mean better results, and combining exfoliating acids with tretinoin can cause significant irritation if your skin isn’t tolerating them well. The right strength, frequency and combination need to be tailored to your skin, and tretinoin isn’t suitable for everyone.

While these are three of our favourite actives, daily SPF, a good cleanser, and moisturiser are still essential parts of a healthy skincare routine.

We’re curious: if you’re over 40, which skincare ingredient has made the biggest difference to your skin? Let us know below 🤍

The problem vs the treatment. Sounds simple, right?

Under eye concerns? Polynucleotides.
Pigmentation? BBL.
Fine lines? Anti-wrinkle injections.

Except we’d never actually prescribe treatments quite that simply.
Two people can walk into The Skin Lab using exactly the same words to describe what bothers them and leave with completely different recommendations.

“I look tired” could be pigmentation, redness, volume changes, poor skin quality or changes around the eyes. “My face is sagging” could involve skin laxity, loss of structural support or several age-related changes happening at once.

So while this post gives you an idea of the different tools we have available, we always need to assess the problem before deciding on treatment.

If you know what’s bothering you but have no idea what you need to do about it, that’s completely fine.

Bring us the problem. We’ll help you work out the treatment. 🤍

Not every aesthetic treatment is worth your money, and after years of working with skin and laser technology, there are a few I personally wouldn’t prioritise 👀

The aesthetics industry constantly introduces new treatments, and while innovation is brilliant, newer doesn’t automatically mean better. Equally, just because a treatment is popular or widely available doesn’t mean it’s the most effective option for what you’re trying to achieve.

For me, it comes down to the quality of the evidence, how consistently a treatment delivers results, and whether better alternatives are available.

Of course, this doesn’t mean these treatments never have a place or that everyone will respond in the same way. These are simply the choices I’d make based on my clinical experience and where I believe patients are more likely to see a worthwhile return on their investment.

I’m curious, have you ever spent money on an aesthetic treatment and felt disappointed with the results? I’d love to know which one 🤍

We’re a team of people who genuinely love what we do, love the technology we work with and could probably discuss pigmentation, lasers and skin health for much longer than anyone outside the industry would consider reasonable.

So yes, laser-obsessed, skin-obsessed, and VERY The Skin Lab.

If you’re looking for a team who’ll get just as invested in your skin as you are, come and see us 🤍

Knowing when not to treat something is just as important as knowing how to treat it.

We can safely manage many skin concerns in clinic, but sometimes the right next step is a GP or dermatologist rather than a cosmetic treatment.

We’d refer you on if we were concerned about things like persistent or cystic acne with a risk of scarring, a lesion that looks unusual or has changed, or a rash that may need medical diagnosis or prescription treatment.

That doesn’t mean we’re being overcautious. It means we’re staying within scope and making sure the concern is properly assessed before anything cosmetic is done.

Especially with lesions, not everything that looks harmless should be treated without a proper diagnosis first.

If we think something needs medical review, we’ll always explain why and point you in the right direction. Your skin health has to come before the treatment 🤍

If there’s one thing we want you to feel when you come to The Skin Lab, it’s that you’re in experienced hands and you don’t need to have all the answers yourself.

Our approach has always been to look at the person and their skin first, then decide what deserves our attention. We’ve invested in advanced technology because it gives us options, but having more treatments available doesn’t mean recommending more treatments. It means choosing more carefully.

We believe in proper assessment, realistic expectations and plans that make sense for the long term. We’ll tell you when we think something will make a meaningful difference, when we think your money would be better spent elsewhere, and when your skin simply needs time, a simpler routine or input from another specialist before we do anything at all.

Ultimately, we want you to know what’s worth doing for your skin and what isn’t. You don’t need to come to us knowing which treatment you need. Tell us what’s bothering you, and we’ll assess your skin, explain the options and be clear about what we think is worth your time and money.

If that sounds like the kind of clinic you’ve been looking for, book a consultation via the link in our bio or send us a message if you want to speak to us first. We’d love to meet you. 🤍

Pigmentation, redness and rough texture? This is why BBL + MOXI work so well together ✨️

BBL is brilliant for unwanted skin colour, think pigmentation, sun damage, redness, visible vessels, and an uneven complexion. MOXI is more about resurfacing and refinement, helping with texture, pores, fine lines and that rougher, less polished look skin can develop over time.

Used together, you’re addressing both tone and texture in the same treatment plan, which is why the combination can make such a noticeable difference to overall skin quality.

Expect a few days when the skin may feel dry or slightly sandpapery as it renews, then clearer, smoother, and more even-looking skin as everything settles.

If sun damage, redness, pigmentation, and texture are on your list, this is one combination I’d consider.

Send us a message or book a consultation via the link in our bio, and we can talk through whether BBL + MOXI would suit your skin 💌
