Most of us love a spell of warmer weather – especially in Ireland, where they don’t come around that often! Long, hot days give us the chance to spend some quality time outdoors. But high temperatures can come with hidden risks for our older loved ones.

Here are a few simple ways you can support older loved ones when temperatures rise.

Watch for signs of overheating
Older people can be more vulnerable to heat-related illness, and symptoms may not always be immediately obvious.

Look out for:

Dizziness or confusion
Fatigue or weakness
Headaches or nausea
If you notice any of these signs, help your loved one move to a cooler place and encourage them to drink more fluids.

Stay connected
Whether it’s a visit, a phone call, or a quick text message, a simple check-in can make all the difference. A little extra awareness and support can go a long way towards helping older loved ones stay safe, comfortable, and reassured during hot summer days.

Here are a few simple ways you can support older loved ones when temperatures rise.

Help them dress for the heat
Lightweight, loose-fitting clothing made from breathable fabrics can make a big difference. Avoid heavy layers when keeping skin covered from direct sunlight if going outside.

Avoid the hottest part of the day
Encourage your loved one to stay out of direct sunlight, especially between late morning and mid-afternoon, when temperatures are at their highest. If they would like to go outside, make sure they are wearing an appropriate sunscreen, and there’s a spot in the shade where they can rest and stay hydrated.

🌞Most of us love a spell of warmer weather – especially in Ireland, where they don’t come around that often! Long, hot days give us the chance to spend some quality time outdoors. But high temperatures can come with hidden risks for our older loved ones.

Here are a few simple ways you can support older loved ones when temperatures rise.

Stay hydrated
To help prevent dehydration, leave plenty of water within easy reach of your loved ones, and encourage them to take regular sips throughout the day. You can also offer fresh fruit like melon or strawberries, which have a high water content.

Keep the home cool and comfortable
During hotter weather, it’s important to manage indoor temperatures. You can do this by closing the curtains during the hottest part of the day, and opening windows when it’s cooler outside, particularly in the evening.

Turn off lights and appliances that aren’t in use. Even small changes like these can help create a more comfortable environment, and they might save on the electricity bill too!
