For years, I’ve been talking about the IVF industry — and sometimes, couples are genuinely shocked when I recommend IVF.
I am NOT against IVF.I am against the overuse and abuse of IVF that we see today.
Fixed protocols like “3 IUIs and then IVF”, pushing everyone down the same treatment pathway, and treating fertility like a predictable algorithm — all of this needs to change.
Fertility treatment needs to move towards individualised medicine, where the treatment is decided based on the couple sitting in front of us, not a predetermined protocol.
Doctors are victims of this system too.
Many doctors working in corporate IVF setups are caught between what they believe is right for their patient and the pressures of benchmarks, overheads, targets and corporate expectations.
Most of us entered medicine because we wanted to help people. We don't become doctors to exploit our patients. But doctors can sometimes be pushed into a corner by a system that measures success in numbers.
The good news is — times are changing.
I’m seeing more and more doctors working within corporate IVF clinics questioning the system, pushing back and choosing simpler, more appropriate treatments before jumping to IVF.
And somewhere, I’d like to believe that I’ve played a small part in that change.
It has been a long fight. And honestly, it’s a fight I’m incredibly proud of.
Because today, I see more and more couples asking questions, understanding their options and realising that IVF is an option — not always the only option.
If the information that my colleagues and I have been putting out has helped even one couple make a more informed decision, then every uncomfortable conversation has been worth it.
So here’s some love to all my fellow doctors working in fertility.
We may disagree. We may practice differently. We may even fight the system in different ways.
But one thing is for sure , we all love our patients equally ❤️
