The Sri Lanka Medical Association is the oldest and most prestigious professional medical association in Sri Lanka. It is widely considered the apex of all medical associations in Sri Lanka. The SLMA is the oldest professional medical association in Asia and Australasia with a history dating from 1887 with the then 'The Ceylon Branch of The British Medical Association' finally evolving into the 'Sri Lanka Medical Association' in 1972. We encourage all users of this page to share and discuss relevant non-commercial content in relation to medicine and health in Sri Lanka.

Foundation Sessions 2026 – Day 02

The second day of Foundation Sessions 2026, organised by the Sri Lanka Medical Association in collaboration with the Kandy Society of Medicine, brings together leading medical professionals to share contemporary knowledge, clinical advances, and practical insights across multiple specialties.

The programme features a plenary lecture on advances in lipid management, the Sir Marcus Fernando Oration on cardiovascular disease, and expert-led symposia covering facial aesthetics, musculoskeletal health, endocrine disorders, and artificial intelligence in modern clinical practice. The day also includes a guest lecture on the history of medicine, providing participants with a broader perspective on the evolution of medical knowledge and practice.

The Sir Marcus Fernando Oration at Foundation Sessions 2026, organised by the Sri Lanka Medical Association in collaboration with the Kandy Society of Medicine, will be delivered by Professor Pandula Mahesh Athaudaarachchi.

Titled “From Risk to Rescue: A Sri Lankan Cardiologist’s Journey Through Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease and Structural Heart Disease,” the oration highlights perspectives on cardiovascular disease, clinical decision-making, and the evolving approaches to managing complex cardiac conditions.

The Dr E.M. Wijerama Endowment Oration at Foundation Sessions 2026, organised by the Sri Lanka Medical Association in collaboration with the Kandy Society of Medicine, will be delivered by Professor Chandrika Wijeyaratne, Consultant Endocrinologist and Diabetologist and Past President of the SLMA.

Titled “Women and Health, The Sri Lankan Perspective – An Investment Across Generations,” the oration explores the importance of women's health in Sri Lanka and its lasting impact on individuals, families, and future generations.

Highlights from the SLMA CME on Fixed Dose Combination (FDC) Medications

The Sri Lanka Medical Association (SLMA) successfully conducted a Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme on Fixed Dose Combination (FDC) Medications on 28th October 2026 at the SLMA Auditorium.

The programme featured expert insights into the pharmacological, regulatory, pharmaceutical, and clinical aspects of FDC medications, followed by an engaging panel discussion. It provided a valuable opportunity for healthcare professionals to enhance their knowledge and discuss the appropriate and rational use of FDC medications in clinical practice.
