When are we going to talk about the fact that it’s hard for citizens to have access to quality healthcare, including ambulance services...

But during the election period, all political parties will have funds to buy buses for their campaigns?

It irks me.

“What a policy dialogue actually looks like”

1. I sat in a room where I learned only 20% of Nigeria’s PHC facilities are fully operational. I didn’t leave that room the same.

2. A policy dialogue isn’t a lecture. It’s a room of people — health workers, government officials, advocates — arguing toward a shared next step.

3. I left that one conversation and wrote an entire policy brief. That’s the job: turn a hard truth in a room into something someone can act on.

4. Most people will never sit in a room like that. But everyone benefits when the people who do, take it seriously.

5. This is the invisible half of development work — not the community visit, but the paper trail that follows it.

Theme: 5 skills that matter more than your degree

1. Your degree gets you in the door. These 5 skills keep you in the room.

2. Report writing — the ability to turn field data into something a policymaker will actually read.

3. Stakeholder communication — knowing how to talk to a Ministry of Health director and a community health worker in the same week.

4. Budget literacy — even a rough Excel workbook can be the difference between a project that runs and one that stalls.

5. Advocacy — ethics approvals, government sign-offs, slow rooms. The sector rewards people who can wait without losing momentum.

The PHC is open.
The nurse is there.
The building is there.

So why are you still being sent outside to buy medicine?

There’s a bigger health policy story behind that experience.

In Episode 7 of Health Policy in 5 Mins, we’re following the journey from PHC funding → medicines → the patient.

And asking one important question:

Where does the system break down?

Have you ever gone to a public PHC and been told to buy your medicine or supplies somewhere else?

👇 Tell me your experience.

had a law in my pocket that said this wasn’t supposed to happen.

I still watched injured students get loaded into a police van. 😶.

2017. I had been reading Nigeria’s National Health Act for months.

I knew Section 20 guaranteed every Nigerian the right to emergency care.

No money. No police report. No condition whatsoever.

But when students got hurt at an event I organised — there was no ambulance. No emergency service. Nothing.

We put them in a police van and prayed.

Here’s what broke me when I thought about it later.

Nigeria records millions of medical emergencies every year. Emergency coverage is below 0.2%.

About 300 Nigerians die every single day in emergencies the law already said must be treated.

Not because the law failed them.

Because they never knew it existed.

This is Episode 6 of Health Policy in 5 Mins — the episode that connects everything.

The BHCPF. PHCUOR. Ward Development Committees. State Health Insurance. Community Health Workers. They all live inside this one document.

The National Health Act of 2014.

If you’re new here — go back to Episode 1. Everything leads here. 👇🏾

If you’ve followed from the beginning — thank you. Share this one. It’s the most important one yet.

Three children.

One MUAC tape.

One question that has stayed with me for years:

How many children never get found?

That’s why community-based health workers matter.

In this episode of Health Policy in 5 Mins, I share a personal story that changed how I see healthcare and explain the policy designed to bring health services closer to every community.

Watch until the end.

Have you ever met a community health worker?
