FrieslandCampina WAMCO Nigeria PLC Sensitises BHUTH Nurses on Nutrition and Malnutrition Prevention

As part of efforts to combat the growing burden of malnutrition in Nigeria, FrieslandCampina WAMCO Nigeria PLC conducted a sensitisation programme for nurses at Bingham University Teaching Hospital (BHUTH), Jos, focusing on the critical role of nutrition in patient care and health outcomes.

Speaking during the programme, the Area Medical Manager, Mrs. Onuba Ogechukwu Grace, stressed the importance of nurses educating patients and their relatives on proper nutrition, noting that malnutrition remains a major global health concern, particularly among children and adolescents. She highlighted that nourishing Nigeria begins with proper nutrition and called for increased awareness and practical interventions at both family and community levels.

Drawing from nutritional data and reports, she noted that millions of children worldwide continue to suffer from malnutrition, making it imperative for healthcare professionals to intensify nutrition education and advocacy efforts.

Delivering a presentation on nutrition interventions, Nurse Ndueze emphasized that nutrition must be given priority in healthcare delivery. She noted that according to available Plateau State nutrition data, approximately 4.8% of children in the state are affected by wasting, a severe form of acute malnutrition. She further explained that the first 1,000 days of life—from conception to a child's second birthday—represent the most critical period for growth and development, making adequate nutrition during this period essential.

She encouraged nurses to continually educate patients and caregivers on making the best use of locally available foods to achieve balanced nutrition. According to her, meals containing the right proportions of essential nutrients contribute significantly to healthy growth, development, and overall wellbeing, especially among children who remain the most vulnerable group.

The Regional Manager of FrieslandCampina WAMCO Nigeria PLC commended Bingham University Teaching Hospital for its commitment to quality patient care and nutritional support. She expressed the organisation's willingness to strengthen partnerships with healthcare professionals in advancing the goal of a healthier and better-nourished Nigeria.

In her remarks, the Assistant Director of Nursing Services, Mrs. Justina Yohanna, appreciated FrieslandCampina WAMCO Nigeria PLC for the enlightening session and called for sustained collaboration in the fight against malnutrition among children and adults. She urged nurses to remain faithful to the nursing profession's commitment to holistic patient care by educating patients on healthy dietary practices and monitoring nutritional intake as part of routine healthcare delivery.

The sensitisation programme reinforced the vital role nurses play in promoting nutrition, preventing malnutrition, and improving health outcomes across communities.

BHUTH RECEIVES ECWA VICE PRESIDENT ON FAMILIARIZATION VISIT

Bingham University Teaching Hospital (BHUTH), Jos, had the honour of receiving the newly installed ECWA Vice President, Rev. Madubuko Chidi Joseph, during a familiarization visit to the hospital.

The Vice President was warmly received by the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Stephen Anzaku, alongside members of the hospital's top management team.

During the visit, the CMD presented a brief history of the hospital, highlighting its growth, achievements, and commitment to providing quality healthcare services. He also conducted the Vice President on a tour of the facility, showcasing the various departments and the remarkable work God is doing through BHUTH in serving humanity.

Speaking after the tour, Rev. Madubuko Chidi Joseph expressed deep appreciation to the management and staff for the warm reception and the opportunity to witness firsthand the impact of the hospital's work. He commended the dedication of the hospital's leadership and workforce, noting that BHUTH continues to make a significant difference in the lives of patients and communities.

Reflecting on the hospital's mission, the Vice President identified what he described as three sacred responsibilities being faithfully carried out by BHUTH:

• Healing the sick
• Teaching and raising the next generation of healthcare professionals, including doctors and nurses
• Representing the Church through compassionate service

He emphasized that in healthcare, the bedside often becomes a pulpit and every act of care a sermon preached through compassion, kindness, and professionalism. Acknowledging the emotional burden that comes with dealing daily with matters of life and death, he encouraged staff to remain steadfast in their calling.

"The Church sees you. The leadership of ECWA sees you. A healed community is prepared ground for the Gospel," he remarked.

Rev. Joseph further assured the hospital of ECWA's continued support and advocacy, particularly in areas that will strengthen healthcare delivery and address existing gaps. He stressed that the good work being done at BHUTH deserves to be celebrated and made known to the world.

Encouraging staff not to grow weary, he reminded them that their labour matters greatly and that every effort contributes to transforming lives and restoring hope.

He concluded with prayers for God's wisdom upon the hospital's management and grace for all staff to continue serving faithfully, praying that BHUTH will remain a place where burdens are lifted, healing is found, and lives are transformed.

NEMSAS and PLASEMSAS Team Visits BHUTH to Strengthen Emergency Healthcare Partnership

The National Emergency Medical Services and Ambulance System (NEMSAS) team, led by Mr. Salihu Abubakar, alongside the Plateau State Emergency Medical Services and Ambulance System (PLASEMSAS) led by Dr. Abel Izang, paid a courtesy and inspection visit to Bingham University Teaching Hospital (BHUTH), Jos.

The visit was aimed at appreciating the hospital's commitment to the implementation of the Federal Government's emergency healthcare initiative, assessing the progress of the programme, and exploring opportunities to further strengthen collaboration for improved service delivery.

During the visit, the PLASEMSAS State Lead formally introduced the National Coordinator to the hospital management. The team was received by Dr. Joy M. Dogo, Chairman Medical Advisory Committee (CMAC), on behalf of the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Stephen Anzaku.

Speaking during the engagement, Dr. Dogo commended the NEMSAS team for their significant contribution to improving healthcare access across Plateau State through the PLASEMSAS programme. She expressed appreciation for the visit and reaffirmed BHUTH's commitment to strengthening the partnership to enhance emergency response services and save more lives.

The NEMSAS team, in turn, expressed satisfaction with the hospital's dedication to the successful implementation of the initiative and commended BHUTH for its continued support.

NEMSAS is a Federal Government intervention designed to provide rapid and life-saving emergency care. The programme covers eligible patients within the first 48 hours of emergency presentation at no cost. Beneficiaries include accident victims, uninsured patients, children aged 0–5 years, pregnant women, snakebite victims, and other emergency cases.

The initiative also operates an ambulance response system that facilitates the transportation of patients, particularly from rural and underserved communities, to accredited healthcare facilities participating in the programme.

Through this intervention, the Federal Government continues to work towards reducing preventable deaths and improving access to emergency healthcare services across the country.
