Your nervous system can react before your thoughts catch up.
A racing heart, tense muscles, restlessness, or a sudden urge to leave can sometimes appear before we consciously understand what triggered the reaction.
Our bodies are constantly taking in information and responding to what they have learned from previous experiences. This is one reason why simply telling ourselves to “calm down” does not always work.
Learning to recognise these early signals can help us respond differently: slowing down, grounding ourselves, noticing what is happening, and giving the body time to realise that the present moment may be different from the past.
Sometimes understanding begins with listening to the body. Learn more at ICBS
