The 79th Session of the WHO Regional Committee for South-East Asia opened today, bringing together Health Ministers and senior officials from across the Region to strengthen health systems, reduce inequalities and advance health and well-being for all. 🌏

Over 4️⃣ days, Member States will exchange experiences and identify practical actions to accelerate progress towards shared health goals

A key highlight is the Ministerial Round Table on Human Resources for Health: Equity in Specialized Care, focusing on how countries can better align health workforce planning, education, deployment and retention with changing population health needs.

For people like Bhagwati who have suffered injuries in the floods, being able to access rehabilitation services is crucial to making full recovery.

"I am worried whether I'll be able to continue my medications."

At 70, Shaili Dangol has more to worry about than finding a safe place to stay. After devastating flash struck Nepal’s district on 26 August, she was forced to leave her home and is now staying at a holding centre in Nuwakot.

Shaili lives with high blood pressure and , and depends on daily medicines to stay well. But with roads washed away, and health facilities damaged, finding the medicines she needs has become increasingly challenging. For people like Shaili who live with noncommunicable diseases or chronic conditions, an can turn a routine need into a daily uncertainty. Keeping medicines and essential health services within reach is therefore a vital part of the emergency response.

World Health Organization (WHO) is working with the Government of and partners to help restore essential health services and support continued access to care post-disaster.

To support government-led disease surveillance efforts following the recent floods, WHO yesterday handed over rapid diagnostic test kits for dengue, malaria, scrub typhus, influenza A+B, and leptospirosis to the Department of Health Services for immediate dispatch to affected areas.

Floodwaters and standing water significantly elevate the risk of waterborne and vector-borne outbreaks. Deploying these rapid diagnostics enables local health teams to detect cases early, prevent widespread outbreaks, and target treatment effectively.

This delivery forms part of WHO’s overall commitment to assist national health authorities with technical and operational support as response needs evolve.

The health impacts of the recent floods in extend well beyond the immediate emergency. Preventing disease outbreaks, keeping essential health services running and supporting the mental health of survivors and frontline responders are all critical to addressing the health needs of affected communities.
