Our Kendo Special Session was a valuable opportunity for children to learn not only Kendo techniques, but also the meaning of true strength.

We talked about how the purpose of learning Kendo is not to become strong enough to hurt others, but to understand how to use our strength responsibly.

Through Kendo, we hope children will develop not only physical strength, but also self-control, courage, respect and kindness✨

True strength is not about hurting others. It is about knowing when and how to use your strength responsibly.

Thank you also to Aktive for supporting our Mud Lotus programme and helping make these experiences possible.

You don’t have to be perfect to belong.

This Mental Health Awareness Week, the theme “Belonging Matters” has me reflecting on a Japanese concept close to my heart: 侘び寂び — wabi-sabi.

Wabi finds beauty in simplicity and imperfection. Sabi appreciates the quiet beauty that develops with time—in weathered wood, a well-loved tea bowl, and the traces of a life lived.

When I reflect on this through the lens of belonging, I think about how often we feel we must have everything together before we can let others see us.

But we can be tired, uncertain, grieving, or still finding our way—and remain worthy of care and connection.

For me, wabi-sabi is an invitation to meet ourselves and one another with more tenderness. To make room for our unfinished stories, our differences, and the changes that come with time.

We can help create that room through small things: listening without rushing to fix, inviting someone in, or checking in without expecting them to say they are okay.

Sometimes belonging begins with a simple message:
“You can come as you are. There is a place for you here.”

Our tamariki and rangatahi had a great time exploring the world of Japanese Kendo!

Through practising basic movements, using their voices, and moving together, the kids experienced some of the values of Japanese budo, including respect, gratitude, courage, and challenging themselves.

Kendo is not just about physical movement. It also offers opportunities to build confidence, develop self-awareness, and learn how to respect and support others.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for this special session!

Missed this session? We’ll be running the same Kendo session again on Saturday, 17 October! We’d love to see you there.

At Mud Lotus, we create a safe and welcoming space where tamariki and rangatahi can move, express themselves, connect with others, and grow — in their own way and at their own pace.

Thank you also to Aktive for supporting our Mud Lotus programme and helping make these experiences possible.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our Golden Festival Workshop!

Together, we enjoyed a peaceful Zen meditation, a mindful walk in nature and Zen-inspired art activities.

It was a lovely opportunity to slow down, connect with nature, express creativity and take a moment for ourselves.

Thank you for sharing this special time with us. We hope you left feeling refreshed and connected.

🥋 Little Samurai Spirit ~ From Challenging to Growth

Discover the spirit of Japanese budo through kendo!

In this fun and energetic session, children will experience the basic movements of kendo, use their voices, and enjoy moving their bodies together.

We’ll also explore some of the values behind budo — respect for others, gratitude, courage, and the importance of challenging yourself.

These values are not only for kendo. They can help children build confidence and grow in both mind and body in everyday life.

No previous kendo experience is needed. This session is designed to be fun and accessible for children.

What a fun morning of movement, learning and connection last weekend!

Our dance session with Tania Kingi brought everyone together through music, movement and creativity. The kids learned about Māori philosophy and enjoyed dance incorporating Māori movements.

We loved seeing the kids move, explore and enjoy themselves in their own way.

No pressure, no need to be a dancer — just a space to move, have fun and express yourself.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, and a special thank you to Tania Kingi for sharing her knowledge, energy and love of movement with us 💚

Thank you also to Aktive for supporting our Mud Lotus programme and helping make these experiences possible.

Ngā mihi nui!
