Why isn’t your knee rehab working?

Maybe your treatment or exercise rehab isn’t specific to your problem.

Effective rehabilitation isn’t about doing more.

It’s about targeting the biggest problem first.

That’s where an individual assessment makes all the difference.

We listen to your story and learn about your problem.
We deliver a quality assessment to identify a diagnosis.
We illustrate a recovery roadmap that helps get you back to the things that you want to do.

Running isn’t usually the problem.

The problem is often doing more than your body is ready for.

Ask yourself:

🏃 Have you increased your distance?

⛰️ Added more hills?

⚡ Started speed work?

👟 Changed shoes?

😴 Been sleeping less?

💪 Stopped strength training?

Small changes add up.

Understanding what changed is often the key to staying injury free.

Not all kneecap pain is the same.

Two people can have pain in exactly the same place—but need completely different rehabilitation programmes.

The cause might be:
• Weak quadriceps
• Poor hip control
• Sudden increases in training
• Running mechanics
• Reduced confidence after injury

That’s why successful rehab starts with identifying your biggest limitation.

One knee.

Most running injuries are a result of increasing running mileage over and above what your body can handle. Running specific strength is so important in reducing the risk of injury. Understanding the base strength of important running muscles such as the calves, hamstrings and quads is a great start to designing a running specific strength program. Want to know your strength numbers? We have a running specific strength assessment ready for you. Get in touch via messenger.

It was another great season for Night ‘n Day Otago Nuggets Lead physio Sam Jewell. We see the effort and time he puts into getting the players back on the court. The players are getting the highest level of sports physio! Well done to the team and management for the 2026 season. Let’s go 2027!

🔹 Holds are too short (under 30 seconds)
🔹 Not consistent enough across the week
🔹 The restriction isn’t coming from the muscle at all

Joint restrictions, nervous system tension, and old injuries all limit range of motion differently — and stretching alone won’t fix all of them.

A proper assessment can pinpoint what’s actually going on, so you’re working smarter, not just harder.

That’s what we do.

If you want to genuinely improve your flexibility, here’s what the research actually supports:

✅ Static stretching (holding a stretch at end range) is the most effective type for increasing long-term range of motion
✅ Hold each stretch for at least 30 seconds
✅ Aim for around 5 minutes total per muscle group
✅ Do this 5-6 days per week
✅ Stretch after a warm-up or after exercise, when your tissue is warmer and more receptive

Dynamic stretching (controlled movement) is great for warming up before activity. But if your goal is actually getting more flexible over time, consistent static holds are where the evidence sits.

The other thing worth knowing — if you’ve been stretching consistently and a particular area just won’t change, that’s often a sign the restriction isn’t coming from the muscle itself. Joint restrictions, nervous system tension, and old injuries all respond differently. Getting it assessed can save months of stretching the wrong thing.

That’s exactly what our team is here for. 🙌

We welcome Thomas back to our team during his off season from the Highlanders rugby team. Thomas has recently been away with the Maori All Blacks. It’s a pleasure to have someone of his caliber join the Recovery Room team. Thomas is open to see patients at our main clinic and at Compound Gym.

We get asked this all the time. Here is our honest answer……
❌ 10-15 seconds — not long enough for real change
✅ 30+ seconds — gives your nervous system time to adapt
✅ ~5 mins total per muscle group
✅ 5-6 days per week
✅ After a warm-up or workout

That’s it. Simple, consistent, and backed by the research.

If you’ve been stretching for months and still feel stuck — it might be time to get assessed rather than stretch harder 🙌
