Talking about death is never easy — yet it is one of life’s certainties.
Over the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing three gentle reflections to help guide you through the practical and emotional aspects of this journey — including understanding death, meaningful farewells, and grief.

Part One: The Reality of Death
When someone we love dies, it can feel overwhelming. Knowing what to do first can ease some of that uncertainty.
Generally, deaths fall into two categories: expected or sudden.
When a Death Is Expected
If a death is anticipated, contact your chosen Funeral Director.
They will liaise with the GP to complete the necessary documentation and guide you through the next steps.
You can meet at a time that feels right to begin planning the service.
When a Death Is Sudden
If a death is unexpected, the Coroner may become involved. Police will attend, make initial enquiries, and arrange transfer to a Coroner’s mortuary if required.
You are free to appoint the Funeral Director of your choice, who will liaise with the Coroner on your behalf.
The Coroner’s role is to confirm identity, cause of death, and circumstances. This sometimes involves a post-mortem examination.
Registration Details
We will also guide you through the information needed for official registration, such as:
• Date and place of death
• Date of birth
• Parents’ names
• Marital history
• Children’s details
We understand this can feel like a lot to take in. Our role is to walk alongside you — ensuring every step is handled with care, clarity, and compassion.

Coping With Grief Over the Holiday Season
Whether the loss of a loved one is recent or further in the past,
Christmas is often a time when we feel their absence more.
Here are some strategies for coping with grief over the holidays:
• Acknowledge your grief: Allow yourself to feel sadness, anger, and joy. It's important to expand the conversation
around grief during the holidays, when many people experience feelings of loss and sorrow.
• Create new traditions: Making new memories can be healing.
• Ask for help: Grief is a normal part of life, and it's okay to ask for help if you need it.
• Honour your loved one: You can share memories, light a candle, or create a memory box. You can also implement these traditions going forward.
• Set realistic expectations: Try not to cancel the holiday, but instead set realistic expectations for yourself.
• Draw comfort from being around others: You can find solace in being with supportive family and friends at this time of year.
• Be patient with yourself: Remember that grieving can be hard work, but the years ahead don't need to be a time of constant sadness.
Most of all
Take care of yourself
Make sure you get enough rest and engage in activities
that bring you comfort.
If you know someone that has a hard time over Christmas or the holiday season
due to loss, check in and make sure they are ok and follow their lead.
If you need to talk with someone, please contact us,
as we can help with referrals and have literature available.
