“I tried probiotics and they didn’t work.” We hear this all the time, and Nora explains why in this video.

🦠 Comment PROBIOTIC and we’ll send you a free seat to our live Probiotics Masterclass this Wednesday.

A probiotic can only do so much on its own. It has to be the right one for you, and your gut bacteria need fibre and the right conditions to thrive. Skip those and even an expensive probiotic may not do much.

On Wednesday, Nora goes live with nutritional therapist Hannah Rayner and clinical nutritionist Johanna Holtz.

They’ll go through how to tell science from marketing on a probiotic label, what to look for after antibiotics, and why the same probiotic can work very differently in two different guts.

96% of us don’t eat enough fibre 🌱
Comment FIBRE and we’ll send you our free guide.

UK adults eat only half the fibre they need, around 16g a day against a target of 30g.

Nora’s advice in The Times? Get your fibre from as many different foods as possible. Your gut bacteria feed on it, and the more variety you eat, the more different bacteria you feed.

Comment GUIDE for our free baby pouch & snack guide.

Rice cakes are fine. Just not on their own.
Hardly anyone raises a child without them. The fix isn’t cutting them out, it’s what goes next to them. Protein or fat alongside the carbohydrate makes it a steadier snack.

Inside the guide:

✔️ A 10-second check you can do in the supermarket aisle
✔️ What to look for vs what to think twice about
✔️ Why “no added sugar” doesn’t mean no sugar
✔️ Why the NHS says babies under 12 months don’t need snacks — and how many are marketed to them anyway

Pouches have their place. A long-haul flight, a day out or when there’s no time.

But they’re made to sit on a shelf for a long time — and processing for shelf life changes what’s left in the food. Less fibre. Less vitamin C.

NHS advice: don’t rely on pouches, jars and pots as everyday food. And squeeze the contents onto a spoon rather than letting your baby suck from the nozzle.

Comment GUIDE to get the 10-second check our registered nutritional therapists do before any baby snack goes in their trolley.

In August we analysed 224 baby foods from 9 leading UK brands against the Government’s OHID voluntary guidelines. What we found is why I wrote to the UK Government, with 25 scientists and doctors, asking for those guidelines to become law.

The three checks in this carousel are the ones our experts use in the aisle. There are six in the full guide, along with what to avoid and how to read front-of-pack claims – developed by registered nutritional therapists.

Parents shouldn’t need a nutrition degree to read a pouch 🤍

Child nutritionist on 5 ways to use baby food pouches better 👇

Pouches shouldn’t be an everyday food or make up the majority of a child’s diet — but they do have a place. So when you do use them, here’s how to use them well.

Charlotte’s 5 tips:
1️⃣ Use them now and then, not every day. Pouches are best as an occasional convenience, not a replacement for meals.
2️⃣ Look beyond the fruit ones — and check the back. Many lean heavily on fruit. Explore the savoury range (bolognese, chicken tikka…) and read the ingredients. Gut check: would you expect these ingredients if you made it at home?
3️⃣ Don’t feed straight from the pouch. Sucking from the spout means your baby misses touching, feeling and exploring food. Squeeze it onto a spoon or into a bowl.
4️⃣ Choose more texture. Babies need to practise chewing early on, so don’t rely on the very smooth ones.
5️⃣ Offer alongside finger foods. Pair a pouch with something to explore — rice balls, chapati, a soft veg.

The bottom line: pouches are fine when you need them, just not as an everyday food or the majority of the diet. Focus on variety, texture and family foods where you can. 💛
