Sometimes the hardest thing isn’t feeling something. It’s finding the words for it.

And sometimes, even the people who care about us most don’t know what to ask, what to say, or how to help.

That’s part of what makes The Parting Glass by Gateway Theatre, Singapore resonate with the conversations we’ve been having at MenToo.

Through Jim, the play explores masculinity, mental health and the things that can remain hidden behind humour, confidence and being “the life of the party”. It asks a deceptively simple question:

How well do we really know someone, and what might we be missing when we don’t ask?

We believe stories can create openings for conversations that might otherwise be difficult to begin. So we’re glad to share this production with the MenToo community.

There’s been a lot of discussion about what young men believe. I’m more interested in what’s shaping those beliefs.

I’m glad to see AWARE’s latest research adding to the growing conversation around men and masculinity in Singapore.

The study raises important questions about younger men, emotional expression and traditional ideas of what men and women “should” do.

For me, its value is less about labelling a generation and more about opening up better questions. Experts have also cautioned against drawing sweeping conclusions from a single study, and AWARE itself describes the research as a starting point for deeper exploration.

That reflects what I see in my own professional work.

I do meet young men who hold quite traditional views about what it means to be a man. But I also meet many who are open, thoughtful and actively working out what masculinity means for them today.

So rather than simply asking, “What is wrong with young men?”, perhaps the bigger question is:

What is happening around our boys and young men?

What are they hearing about strength, success and masculinity? Where are they finding connection and belonging? Who are their role models? Where do they go when they feel lonely, uncertain, or wonder if they are good enough?

At Amicus, these questions sit behind our work with MenToo and the Men’s Charter. We are also partnering with Murdoch University on further research into men’s experiences. Clear evidence matters if we want to understand what is really happening and build support that genuinely helps. We’ll share more when the research is ready.

We are also exploring a support group for younger men, after hearing directly from young men about loneliness, wanting deeper connection, and wanting a space where they can talk openly.

I’m encouraged that more people are entering this conversation.

The more we can show up, speak up and grow together, the better we can support the boys and men around us.

Many men become very good at looking like they are okay.

They show up for work, care for their families, carry responsibilities and keep going. Sometimes, the more capable or successful they appear, the harder it feels to admit that they are struggling.

This is at the heart of Vietnam TV in Singapore’s recent feature on MenToo.

Danny Loong and Amir Khan Ansari come from different worlds, but both have experienced difficult periods they found hard to speak about. For Amir, what helped was not someone trying to fix everything. It was having Danny as a safe person he could talk to openly.

The encouraging thing is that a safe space can begin with just one person who is willing to listen without judgment.

The feature also shares how Murdoch University Singapore is studying men’s lived experiences, helping to build the evidence for better support and longer-term change.

We are glad this conversation is reaching more people. Not simply because MenToo is being seen beyond Singapore, but because each conversation helps expand our idea of what strength can look like.

Strength can be speaking honestly.
Strength can be asking for support.
Strength can also be showing up for someone else.

If a man in your life opens up, you do not need to have the perfect words. You can simply start with: “I’m here. Tell me more.”

Every honest conversation is a step towards a culture where more men feel able to speak, connect and move forward.

Behind the scenes at Amicus 🎥

What becomes possible when men feel safe enough to lower their guard?

At our inaugural monthly MenToo Gathering, men came together to explore a question many quietly carry: "Am I enough?"

What followed was an evening of honest conversation, deep reflection, laughter and vulnerability. Different experiences were shared, but one thing became clear: none of us has to navigate these questions alone.

Two men can be carrying the exact same weight and need completely different doors out of it.

Some men need a space to talk, reflect, and rebuild a sense of who they are. Others need something harder: help breaking a pattern they've been stuck in, with accountability alongside the support.

That's why we're glad the MenToo network now includes two more.

Authentic Men Asia, gives men a place to move past silence and be honest about what they're carrying, in community with others doing the same.

Fellowship of Men (Singapore) works alongside men in some of the hardest conversations there are, including helping men in family violence situations recognise the pattern, take responsibility, and build something healthier instead.

Neither organisation could do everything on its own. Together with the rest of the MenToo network, there are now more doors, and more chances that a man finds the one that actually fits what he's going through.

We are encouraged to see family justice receiving sustained attention at the national level.

For families going through divorce, the legal process is only one part of the journey. What happens around it, and long after it, can shape the wellbeing of parents and children for years.

That is why it matters that policymakers are listening closely to practitioners who see the realities, pressures and gaps in the system firsthand.

At Amicus, we believe better outcomes come when legal, psychological and relational needs are considered together. There is more work to do, but continued attention, honest dialogue and thoughtful reform are important steps forward.

Behind every case is not just a legal matter, but a family trying to find its footing again.
