A family member brought this picture into our office, and we thought it was too good not to share.

The science is clear: the thoughts we practice every day shape the pathways in our brains.

So today, ask yourself: What are you growing?

Minds Matter. And small daily choices can make a big difference over time.

Sleep is one of the most important things you can do for your brain health.

This month, The Empowerment Project welcomed Dr. Amy Scepaniak of Smile Solutions. She educated us on the importance of oral hygiene, but also on breathing patterns and sleep hygiene.

Dr. Scepaniak has completed extensive training on sleep health. She educated us on how sleep apnea affects more than energy levels. It impacts heart health, blood sugar, and long-term brain function.

At Minds Matter, sleep is a key part of every brain health evaluation because poor sleep is a major risk factor for cognitive decline and dementia.

The good news: treatment options have expanded beyond CPAPs. Dentists are now completing sleep studies and use alternate treatments for sleep apnea, include oral appliances and soft palate laser therapies that can improve airflow and sleep quality.

I am always up for any kind of treatment that can protect my brain health. I’ve personally completed an at-home sleep study and have been fitted for an oral appliance to improve oxygen with sleep.

And recently I’ve let Dr. Scepaniak “bring on the laser” to improve my soft palette/airflow. It didn’t hurt and I couldn’t believe how much better I could breathe immediately afterwards.

Thanks Dr. Scepaniak for taking the time to collaborate with our group and for offering these services in Aberdeen! And most of all, thanks for letting me share pictures of you demonstrating mouth taping!!!

Three years…I am a little overwhelmed looking back. Three years ago I opened Minds Matter PLLC.

I started Minds Matter because I remember the fear I felt when I went through West Nile brain fog and kept being told “give it time and it will get better.” You wouldn’t tell that to someone with a broken bone…why would you tell that to someone with a “broken” brain? That experience led me down a path to look at how we can do better.

I knew we needed a place locally where people could go and say “I think I’m losing my mind.” When you come in and tell us that, we complete standardized testing and have real conversations about what you can do to change the future of your brain. We help you through therapy and by collaborating with your physician and your family to get you back to “normal”.

I knew that people were out there scared like me about their risk of dementia in their future. And that women needed to have real conversations about the impact of menopause on their brains. Or what impact that concussion or illness really had on them.

I knew that when you give someone hope, a plan and a roadmap, we could fight for better brains today and fight dementia in their futures. I also knew that those fighting dementia needed support and their family needed real conversations about the road ahead.

What I didn’t know is how this community would get behind me and this dream. I never would have dreamt that people from Sioux Falls to Sturgis, and everywhere in between as well as surrounding states would make the trip to Aberdeen.

Thank you for supporting us and letting us keep dreaming bigger on how to keep serving our communities.

Minds Matter. Thanks for helping us prove that dementia isn’t inevitable!!!

Love you all. Tiffany

So I did a really important thing the other day…. I voted.

In a month where we celebrate the lives lost to fight for this freedom, make sure you honor them by educating yourself on the candidates, the issues and get out and vote.

A huge thank you to all the workers and volunteers who make the voting process go so smoothly. The poll workers at the Brown County Courthouse were so helpful and friendly. Thanks for all that you do!!!

I caught these pictures when Nicole’s kids brought her coffee earlier this month. Both were wearing mental health awareness sweatshirts, and it made me smile.

So much has changed. Years ago, mental health wasn’t talked about the way it is today. Mental health impacts brain health. So take care of yours.

It’s encouraging to see stigma shrinking and the next generation helping lead the way.

Your mind matters.

Happy Mental Health Awareness Month 💚

This Memorial Day, we pause to honor and remember the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country.

We also want to recognize the incredible work of the Honor Flight program, an organization dedicated to transporting veterans to Washington, D.C. so they can visit the memorials built in honor of their service and sacrifices.

This cause is especially meaningful to us at Minds Matter PLLC. Bethany Hanson had the privilege of going with her dad Floyd Hansmeier on his Honor Flight. My late grandpa Jesse Peckham traveled with other WWII veterans on an Honor Flight.

Watching veterans receive the gratitude and honor they deserve is something that leaves a lasting impact…not only on them, but on the families who love them and on everyone who witnesses it.

Today we remember those who never came home, honor those who served, and express deep appreciation for organizations that ensure service and sacrifice are never forgotten.

Growing up on a farm outside of Bristol taught me many things, including hard work, hope and how people show up for each other in small town communities. In my career, I’ve seen firsthand how dementia impacts this rural way of life.

If we want small towns to thrive, we need to find ways to keep brain health services close to home. Too often, I see families drive 3 hours for specialty care, only to be told there’s nothing they can do except “manage the decline.”
I refuse to believe that should be the standard for rural South Dakota.

That is why I opened Minds Matter PLLC.

We now know that 40% of dementia is preventable, but only if people know this help is available close to home. I’m great at the therapy side, but I need help getting the word out.

Winning the Northern Edge Impact Project would be a game-changer. The marketing support would let me reach the families who are quietly scared, the women navigating brain fog from menopause, the people recovering from concussions and strokes and not sure why their brain “just isn’t normal.”
Here is what I am fighting for:
-Brain health care that stays in rural communities.
-Early screenings so we can prevent dementia.
-Education on how menopause, concussion, illness affect your brain and what you can do to change the course.
-Finding more skilled therapists with a passion for changing lives.

If this resonates with you…if you have ever watched someone you love struggle or you believe rural South Dakota deserves better, please LIKE and SHARE this post. I appreciate it — Tiffany.
