As an audiologist, I love when everyday technology helps people become more aware of their hearing.

One feature I hear about more often lately is the / once in a while I will be alerted by my Apple Watch alert for high noise levels. Someone will mention getting a tap on their wrist in a busy restaurant or a sporting event and it catches them off guard!

“I didn’t realize it was that loud.”
Those moments are more helpful than they might seem.
Noise exposure isn’t always obvious in the moment, and it’s not just about sudden, extreme sounds. It’s also about how long you’re in those environments and how often your ears are working in higher noise levels.

The alert is a reminder to check in: Is this environment louder than I thought?
Do I need to step away, lower the volume, or use protection?
Because hearing health isn’t just about addressing changes later, it’s also about protecting what you have now!

Many people don’t realize their Apple AirPods include a feature that can make conversations and TV listening much easier. Live Listen allows your iPhone to act as a microphone, sending sound directly to your AirPods for clearer hearing in challenging environments. 🎧📱

And here’s a bonus tip: placing your phone closer to the sound source can make a noticeable difference!

While this feature does use more battery, it can be a helpful strategy when you need a quick boost in clarity. Even small adjustments like this can support better communication throughout your day!

If you’re looking for a longer lasting solution (that is also less conspicuous) message us!

A common misconception is that hearing is instantly restored the moment a cochlear implant is activated. In reality, the brain needs time to adapt to the new signal. 🎧🧠💬

Aural rehabilitation is an essential part of the journey, and it can take up to 2 years of consistent practice to reach the best possible performance.

Progress may feel gradual, but patience always pays off. We see remarkable improvements every day, and the long‑term benefits are worth the effort. If you’d like to learn more about what to expect, our team is always happy to answer questions!

Most are small moments but they’re also the exact environments where hearing changes can become the most noticeable due to background noise, multiple conversations, even a bit of wind can make things harder to follow.
If you’ve found yourself pulling back from things you used to enjoy, it’s worth pausing to ask why.
Has it become harder to follow conversations? Do you feel more drained in noisy places?
Because often, it’s not about losing interest, it’s about how much effort it takes to stay engaged.
If you haven’t had your yearly hearing screening yet make sure to message us, we will get you in!

There’s often a moment in appointments where the question of age comes up, especially when we start talking about cochlear implants.

In a cochlear implant evaluation, my role as the audiologist is to complete detailed testing, look at how much benefit someone is getting from their current hearing technology, and help determine whether a referral for surgical consultation may be appropriate.

Final candidacy decisions are made by the cochlear implant team, including the surgeon, based on medical, audiologic, and imaging factors.

When we do see people move forward, the focus is on overall health, hearing history, and functional benefit, not the number of birthdays you’ve had!

I’ve worked with many older adults, even into their 80s and 90s, who have gone on to do very well and feel more connected in their day-to-day lives after implantation.

The bigger question isn’t “Am I too old?” It’s “Could I be hearing better than I am right now?”

If you’ve been wondering about that, starting with an evaluation is often the best first step to explore your options!

“I am not sure I can learn all of this new stuff!” 🤔

This concern sometimes comes up, and it is completely understandable!

However, at Schwab Audiology, a hearing aid fitting is designed to be supportive and educational. We review how to insert and remove the devices, how to charge or change batteries, how to clean and store them properly, and how to identify right versus left hearing aids.

Sound quality is also carefully adjusted. Most patients do not start at the full prescription right away, especially new users. The brain needs time to adapt to new sound input, and follow-up visits allow us to make gradual improvements. 🧠

Our goal is to make hearing aids feel manageable, comfortable, and empowering!

When you look at a workshop wall, you might see all of the tools. 🔨🪵

When I look around, I’m looking for the hearing protection. 😂

A lot of people assume that as an audiologist, I only treat hearing loss. But a huge part of my passion is helping people protect their ears long before hearing loss occurs.

If your weekends are filled with woodworking, running power tools, landscaping, or working on cars, your ears are taking a beating. 🥴 Noise-induced hearing loss from hobbies is incredibly common, completely permanent, and 100% preventable.

If you're tired of bulky, uncomfortable earmuffs that leave you sweating or totally cut off from the world around you, we can help. We design custom, medical-grade hearing protection designed to fit your hobbies while filtering out dangerous decibels.

Let's protect your passion so you can enjoy your workshop for years to come! 🤩🙌

“We have two ears and one tongue so that we would listen more and talk less.” — Diogenes

Listening is an active process that involves both the ears and the brain. 👂🧠 When hearing becomes strained, conversations can feel tiring, isolating, or incomplete. Protecting and supporting your hearing helps you stay engaged, connected, and present in everyday moments.

World Listening Day is a reminder to value the role hearing plays in communication and to seek support if listening isn’t as easy as it used to be! ☺️

It’s World Emoji Day, so let’s have a little fun 🎧👂✨

If you had to describe your (or someone you know 🙃) hearing using ONLY emojis, what would you choose?

Are you feeling 🔊, 😌, 🤔, or maybe even 🙉 lately?

Drop your emoji combo in the comments! We love seeing how people “hear” in emoji form.

As an audiologist, I spend a lot of my time helping people hear better. But I am just as passionate about a different side of my job: protecting the hearing you still have. 🛠️🎧

Whether you work in a noisy industrial environment, spend your weekends woodworking, love live music, or are gearing up for summer fireworks, noise-induced hearing loss is 100% preventable.

But it’s also irreversible. 🫣

Too often, people think hearing care is only for when a problem already exists. But real, proactive healthcare starts with prevention.

If your daily life or favorite hobbies put your ears at risk, foam earplugs from the drugstore aren't your only (or best) option. At Schwab Audiology, we specialize in custom-fit hearing protection that provides maximum safety without sacrificing comfort or sound quality.

Let's keep your ears safe today so you can enjoy clear conversations for decades to come. 👂💛
