The Eyeglass Rule, enforced by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), mandates that eye doctors, including optometrists and ophthalmologists, must provide patients with a copy of their eyeglass prescription immediately after an eye examination, at no extra cost. This rule allows patients to shop around for glasses without having to ask for their prescription. Recent updates to the rule, effective September 2024, require doctors to confirm that patients have received their prescription. This ensures transparency and consumer rights in the eyeglass purchasing process.
