Before your next flight, remember to:

• Notify the airline about your wheelchair and any assistance you may need
• Know your rights as a passenger with a disability
• Remove and carry on detachable wheelchair parts
• Pack basic repair supplies, such as zip ties or tape
• Consider TSA PreCheck for a smoother security experience
• Bring a transfer sling if you need assistance boarding
• Plan ahead for restroom access during your flight
• Inspect your wheelchair after landing and report any damage immediately

Taking these simple steps can help protect your equipment, reduce travel-related stress, and ensure you're ready to enjoy your destination with confidence.

What are your plans for this summer? Whether you’re heading to the beach or lake, going camping, firing up the grill, or simply enjoying time outdoors, safety should always come first.

A few simple precautions can help keep everyone safe and make your summer more enjoyable. Always practice water safety by supervising swimmers closely, avoiding distractions, and learning CPR so you’re prepared in an emergency. When camping or spending extended time outdoors, bring essential supplies such as a well-stocked first aid kit, plenty of drinking water, and any necessary medications.

Keep food safety in mind when picnicking or grilling by storing perishable items properly, keeping foods at safe temperatures, and avoiding cross-contamination. Protect yourself from mosquitoes and ticks by wearing long sleeves and pants when appropriate, using EPA-approved insect repellent, and checking for ticks after outdoor activities.

By taking a few simple precautions, you can help prevent common summer-related illnesses and injuries and enjoy a safer, healthier season outdoors.

After spending two weeks in a coma, Alicia came to ClearSky Rehabilitation Hospital of Baytown with one goal: to walk again.

Upon admission, Alicia had significant weakness and impaired coordination that severely limited her mobility. She relied on a Hoyer lift—a device used to safely transfer people with limited mobility—and needed assistance with dressing, eating, and other daily activities. Through hard work, determination, and the support of the hospital’s interdisciplinary healthcare team, Alicia continued to make remarkable progress. By the end of her third week, Alicia had achieved her goal and was ready to return home walking.

Reflecting on her journey, Alicia shared: “Therapy was able to see me walk out of here even when I didn’t see it.”

Older adults are at higher risk for heat-related illness, even in moderate temperatures. Staying cool and hydrated helps prevent dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke. Here are some simple ways to stay safe:

• Drink plenty of water, juices, or electrolyte drinks; avoid alcohol and caffeine
• Stay in air-conditioned spaces when possible (home, library, mall, senior center)
• Keep blinds closed during peak heat and use fans or AC at home
• Wear light, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing
• Limit outdoor activity during hottest hours; plan errands for cooler times
• Use sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses when outside
• Take cool showers, baths, or put damp cloths on the body to help lower temperature

Warning signs of heat-related illness include headache, dizziness, nausea, weakness, confusion, or fainting. If symptoms occur, move to a cool place, hydrate, and rest, and seek medical care if symptoms do not improve. Heat stroke is a medical emergency marked by very high body temperature, hot or dry skin, confusion, or loss of consciousness. Call 911 immediately.

At 91 years old, Martha Ramer faced extraordinary odds after suffering a severe neck injury (an internal decapitation) in a car crash. Following initial medical treatment, hospice care was suggested. However, after seeking a second medical opinion, Martha chose to receive rehabilitation at ClearSky Rehabilitation Hospital of Avondale.

At ClearSky Avondale, the hospital’s interdisciplinary healthcare team developed a customized treatment plan for Martha that included intensive therapy to help her regain strength and independence. Just 15 days later, Martha was discharged from the hospital to an assisted living facility.

“Martha’s story is a beautiful reminder that what we get to do is a gift,” said Amy Hansen, CEO of ClearSky Avondale.
