S is a tricky sound for kids with a lisp! Children who have a frontal lisp tend to bring their tongue too far forward in the mouth when making “s” sounds.

My go-to cue to remind kids to keep their tongue behind their teeth is “hide your tongue”. When saying “S” you shouldn’t be able to see any part of the tongue!

Another quick tip to target speech errors! Today’s tip is my favorite way to tackle s-blend cluster reduction in the word “star”.

• Start with the child’s pronunciation: dar/tar
• hold out S: sssss
• say them together with a space between: sss - dar
• blend the parts together and you’ll get ssssstar

Just a lil disclaimer that cluster reduction is a typical error until 4 years old and we normally wouldn’t target it in speech therapy until a child is over the age of 4! So if you have a toddler still making this kind of error, just know that’s completely normal 🫶🏻

I hear this error all the time, where that final “er” sound at the end of words turns into “uh.” Those “r” sounds can be so tricky!! Try this small adjustment and see if it helps:

Instead of letting the back of the tongue stay relaxed and drop to the bottom of the mouth, contract your tongue muscles and make the tongue super tight and tense. Bring the tongue back and up while tensing to get that “errr” sound at the end of “flower”

When your man understands how important it is to protect his hearing 😍😍😍

Just 15 minutes at 100 dB can result in temporary hearing loss, and repeated or extended exposure can damage inner ear hair cells and lead to permanent hearing loss 😭😭

Stadiums often reach levels up to 110 dB, posing a serious risk of temporary or permanent hearing loss. Ear protection helps prevent noise-induced hearing loss by reducing overall sound exposure.

If you’re attending any loud sporting events this fall, consider this your reminder to protect your and your children’s hearing with ear plugs or noise-reducing earmuffs!

It’s ✨SICK✨ season!! Have you noticed your child sounds constantly congested, like they have a stuffy nose, or a cold, even if they aren’t sick anymore?

Adenoids are a lump of tissue that can help protect children from bacteria or infections. But sometimes the adenoids can become enlarged, which affects air flow through the nose. This will end ho making your child sound like they have a stuffy nose, even if they are no longer sick.

In some cases, removal of the adenoids may be necessary to open that airway back up. If you feel like your child has a constant “stuffy nosed” voice, it might be a good idea to ask your pediatrician for a referral to an ENT.

Speech therapists, I think we’re safe 😅

I died when ChatGPT kept telling me I sound great, when I was leaving off half the word. 😅😂

AI will never replace the human-to-human, therapist-to-child individualized treatment that comes from receiving speech therapy from a qualified, licensed SLP.

This is your reminder that AI is artificial. It’s in its name. AI programs can’t hear and process auditory input. For that reason, an AI system will never be able to give you the same precise feedback as a real live human.

Have you noticed that your child can say R at the beginning or end of words just fine, but sometimes struggles with them in that middle position?

This is a super common error! Here’s how I use segmenting to help teach medial R:

• start by separating the word into 2 syllables around the R
• practice each syllable over and over until you hear a strong R on both
• combine the syllables together again, emphasizing and stretching the R sound

Does your child say things like “otay” or “I tan do it”? That T for K substitution is super common in young kids.

Here’s a little trick I do in speech therapy to help kids get their tongue in the right spot for K. Start with “ahhh” to drop the tongue, then bring the back of the tongue up towards the back of the mouth. Be sure to keep the tongue tip down, or else it will turn to T!
