Straight teeth are the visible benefit. But when your bite and jaw are properly aligned, something else happens: you breathe better. Dr. Bates explains how clear aligners can open your airway and improve your quality of life in ways most people never expect from a dental treatment. Save and share with someone who's been considering aligners.

When a patient describes that first cold or sweet twinge, I take it seriously. Not because it's an emergency. Because it's an opportunity.
Early sensitivity often means the outer enamel layer is losing minerals. The cavity hasn't formed yet. That window for remineralization is still open.
Understanding what your body is telling you changes everything about how we approach dental care.
Save this and share it with someone who deserves answers about their dental health.

The timing of when you brush matters more than most people realize.
Most patients brush after breakfast. Here is what that actually does: overnight, bacteria accumulate in the mouth. Eating before brushing gives those bacteria a food source, which they convert to acid. That acid softens enamel. Brushing immediately after compounds the problem.
Brush before eating when possible. If that does not work for your routine, wait at least 30 minutes after a meal before brushing. This matters even more after acidic foods or drinks like citrus juice or coffee.
Small habits like this add up significantly over time.

She came in embarrassed. When I saw her CT scan, I understood immediately.
Her airway volume measured 3 cubic centimeters. The target is 25 or more. One of the narrowest I have ever seen.
She was already using a CPAP. Still exhausted. Still not sleeping through the night. The machine was doing its job, but it had almost nowhere to push air through.
And the bedwetting? When oxygen levels drop during sleep, ammonia accumulates in the body. Ammonia irritates the bladder. The bladder either forces you awake or you do not wake up at all.
This is why we look at the full picture. Teeth are the starting point. Airway, jaw structure, and how you breathe at night can connect to symptoms that seem completely unrelated.

Mercury filling removal done wrong can expose you to more mercury than leaving them in.
The SMART protocol exists for a reason. Face covered. Nose covered. Dental dam in place. High-volume evacuation pulling v***rs away from you throughout the entire procedure.
If a dentist isn't doing it this way, find one who is.
The IAOMT directory at iaomt.org and Dr. Michelle's vetted list at livingwellwithdrmichelle.com are both good places to start.

In tens of thousands of patients, not one cancer patient without an oral infection.
Dr. Michelle isn't claiming root canals cause cancer. What her clinical experience shows is more nuanced: a chronic oral infection places a sustained burden on the immune system. When the immune system is occupied managing that infection, its ability to identify and clear abnormal cell changes is reduced.
It's not about the tooth in isolation. It's about what that tooth is doing to the rest of your body.

Most dentists remove mercury fillings the same way they placed them. At Total Care Dental, we follow a completely different protocol to protect you before, during, and after removal. Dr. Mac walks you through exactly what that looks like and why it matters for your health. Save this if you've been thinking about getting your mercury fillings out.

If your child has crooked teeth, this is worth understanding.
Crooked teeth are often a sign that the jaw hasn't developed enough room for the airway. And a restricted airway at night creates a cascade of problems that don't look like breathing problems on the surface.
Dark circles. Trouble focusing. Bedwetting. ADHD symptoms. Growth issues.
We reach for labels and medications when sometimes the most important question is: is this child getting enough air?
Palate expansion done early can change the trajectory. The jaw is most responsive when kids are young, which is why catching this in childhood matters so much.

In dental school, Dr. Michelle was told she'd lose her license if she told patients their fillings could affect their health.
Research now shows mercury fillings release v***r continuously. Mercury is a neurotoxin. For some patients, that connection shows up as unexplained memory issues, migraines, or chronic headaches.
If you've been searching for answers and no one has looked at your dental history, it may be worth the conversation.

"It looks fine." Famous last words in dentistry.
She came in with a feeling. Her root canal just didn't feel normal. Standard X-rays showed nothing wrong.
But we ran a 3D CBCT scan — and there it was. A quarter-sized hole in her jawbone, completely invisible to conventional imaging.
That case changed how we practice at Total Care Dental.
Every new patient gets a full 3D scan. Not because we're being overly cautious. Because we've seen what standard X-rays miss.
You deserve to be fully seen.
Save and share this if you think more dentists should be asking "what am I not seeing?"
