In vast, beautiful Alaska, geography can play a critical role in how quickly patients receive lifesaving care.

Through our unique access to Merrill Field Airport, ours is the only nonmilitary hospital in Alaska (and one of only a few in the US) with direct runway access, allowing fixed-wing air ambulances, also known as medevac planes, to taxi directly to our doors. This unique access eliminates the need for a secondary ground ambulance transfer, saving precious time for patients who need specialized care for strokes, cardiac events, trauma and other medical emergencies.

For more than 40 years, we have worked with flight services to connect rural communities with advanced care when it's needed. We are grateful for their partnership and to be part of a collaborative network that helps improve more lives in more ways.

For 43 years, Jerry has helped support the safe, high-quality care our patients count on. He is retiring in June after more than four decades of service to our hospital. Since joining our hospital family in November of 1983, he has served in housekeeping, the OR as a patient care assistant, and since 1999, in sterile processing.

While patients may never see the work happening behind the scenes, Jerry's department plays an important role in every surgery. In sterile processing, surgical trays are washed, assembled, sterilized, wrapped and prepared for the procedures our patients need. Jerry’s steady commitment, attention to detail and years of experience have helped support our surgical teams and the care they provide each day.

When asked what kept him here for so many years, Jerry said it has been the people. "They just like my family," he says.

Jerry’s career reflects the dedication and teamwork that help make excellent care possible. We are grateful for the impact he has made on our hospital, our colleagues and the community we serve. Please join us in thanking Jerry for his 43 years of service and wishing him the very best in retirement.

If you’ve had a baby, you may have heard of postpartum hemorrhage — or severe bleeding after childbirth. While uncommon, it can become life-threatening without prompt treatment, which is why it’s important to recognize warning signs early.

Across our broader HCA Healthcare network of care, more than 200,000 babies are delivered each year. Clinical data from those deliveries helps us identify and implement evidence-based practices to improve maternal and newborn outcomes. This includes reducing elective deliveries before 39 weeks, strengthening blood clot prevention and using medications to reduce the occurrence and severity of postpartum hemorrhage.

💢 If you experience heavy bleeding or feel something isn’t right after giving birth, call 911 or seek immediate care. Know where to go in case of an emergency: https://bit.ly/4dDS81S

Shoutout to our 17-member Patient Access (Registration) team! They're very often the first friendly faces our patients and families see. They play an essential role in the hospitalization process, helping ensure patients are registered accurately, informed clearly and supported from the very start.

On average, the team supports 200 patients each day across three access points, totaling more than 70,000 registrations each year. The team recently celebrated their recognition week with theme days and activities. We can't thank them enough for the professionalism, compassion and teamwork they bring to every interaction.
