What does medication management look like at McKinley Care? In Alaska, assisted living communities are licensed to help residents take their medication. Staff cannot actually administer any medications, but they can remind residents, open bottles, check dosages and times, and even guide someone's hand if necessary. Ensuring all medications are taken at the proper time and amount goes a long way toward overall health and safety. Each person, according to their care plan, will have specific instructions for assisting, reminding, or observing that person when medication is taken at the appropriate time.

Each individual over the age of 60 who resides in a care facility is entitled to the services of a state-appointed ombudsmen. Federal and State laws authorize an ombudsman to identify, investigate, and resolve complaints made by, or on behalf of, seniors in long-term care facilities. State law also authorizes an ombudsman to resolve problems relating to the “residential circumstances” of seniors who live in their own homes. Ombudsmen are all volunteers and are certified and supervised throughout Alaska to provide services and support to seniors. Should you wish to report an incident of concern to the local ombudsman, know that your name will be kept confidential unless you authorize its release.

Happy National Relaxation Day! Did you know that stress (especially prolonged) is highly damaging to your health? When we feel under pressure or stressed out, our body becomes flooded with cortisol and adrenaline, both of which 'flood' the body with hormones that, over sustained periods of time, can lead to high blood pressure, a weakened immune system, stomach troubles, and an overall increased risk of stroke or heart attack. An entire day of relaxation sounds pretty good, doesn't it? Put your feet up and relax!
