Yogas chitta vritti nirodhah.
Yoga is the cessation of the fluctuations of the mind.
It's not a stretch. Not a pose. It's a stillness.
It's what happens when your mind stops replaying yesterday and stops rehearsing tomorrow and finally lands in the present, here.
Once we move out of summer's momentum and into the quieter pull of fall, this is the practice: getting still. Getting grounded. Coming back to the one moment you're actually in.
On the mat, we train this by dropping out of the head and into the body. Breath by breath, shape by shape, until the mind has nowhere to wander.
Once we find that on the mat, it's easier to find it off the mat too: in traffic, waiting in line, in a hard conversation, noticing our own reactions before they run the show.
That's Yoga. The mat is just where we rehearse it.
If you want to enter fall grounded, join us for a mini retreat rooted in stillness:
Long, energizing flows that work to let go of what summer will leave behind
Restorative practices the allow time for the body to rebalance
Sutras for seasonal transition, used the way we actually use them in practice, not as theory
The rest of the time is unstructured on purpose. Time outside in the Maine woods. Meals shared at one table, made with food grown nearby. Quiet mornings before the first practice even starts.
This one's for those of you who've been at this a while. The ones for whom yoga isn't a workout, it's a way of living. Let's get still together. 🍂
