Last month we posted about sponsoring 5 students training as midwives through the Palmetto Perinatal Initiative. Today, at the 2026 Black Maternal Health Conference & Training Institute in Atlanta, we met one of them.

She is not a statistic in our impact report. She is a future midwife who will carry families through the most vulnerable hours of their lives.

Training is where it starts. Staying is the hard part. That is why Swishvo exists: the technology platform where midwives, doulas, and birth workers manage their own credentialing, documentation, and billing, so the calling does not have to cost them everything.

“It’s not really a village if you’re not open to including everyone in that village.”

Dr. Michelle El Khoury is a doula, yoga teacher, and childbirth educator, and she said something on our blog that we haven’t stopped thinking about.

The village she’s describing has always existed. Doulas, midwives, chaplains, herbalists, birthworkers, all doing the work of holding people through the most vulnerable passages of their lives. What’s never existed is a system that pays for it.

She also told us this: you’re not meant to serve everyone, and you’re not meant to work with everyone either. The right people will find you.

Both things are true. The village stays open. The healer keeps her scope.

Ten years of the Black Maternal Health Movement, and the doulas, midwives, chaplains, and herbalists who carried so much of it still cannot bill insurance for the care they give.

9.59 million holistic, spiritual, and ancestral care providers have been structurally excluded from the healthcare system. Not because their care does not work. Because the infrastructure was never built for them.

Day 1. 🧡

The Swishvo team came together in Atlanta for a day centered on alignment, strategy, connection, and ex*****on.

As we continue building the infrastructure that helps whole-person providers get paid, grow their practices, and focus more of their time on the communities they serve, moments like these matter.

We talked about where we’ve been.
We got clear about where we’re going.
And most importantly we aligned on how we’re getting there, together.

Different roles. Different expertise. One mission.

And we’re just getting started.

We built rehabilitation for joint replacements, strokes, heart attacks, surgeries, and sports injuries.

But after pregnancy and birth, one of the most physically and emotionally demanding experiences a person can endure, we often send mothers home with a discharge packet and tell them to return in six weeks.

Make that make sense!

Postpartum recovery can include pain, bleeding, feeding challenges, sleep deprivation, hormonal changes, pelvic floor injury, surgical healing, and major emotional transitions. Yet structured recovery support is still treated like a luxury instead of part of healthcare.

We believe postpartum retreats will become the next major focus of rehabilitation care.

These spaces give mothers time to rest, heal, learn, receive lactation support, eat nourishing meals, and be surrounded by trained professionals during one of the most vulnerable periods of their lives.

As maternal healthcare begins to recognize and pay for more services separately, postpartum recovery cannot remain an afterthought.
That is why Swishvo is building tools for postpartum retreats to manage guests, rooms, care teams, services, payments, and discharge in one place.

Mothers should not have to reach a breaking point before recovery becomes worthy of investment.

Several times a month we hand the blog over to a healer.
✨ What this work costs them.
✨ What it gives back.
✨ What changed the first time their care was documented and paid for.

One of us holds the vision.
One makes sure the technology can be built, trusted, and scaled.
One brings the right providers through the door.
One makes sure they are supported once they arrive.
One builds the pathway from care delivered to clean claims and payment.
And one makes sure everything we commit to actually gets done.

Different responsibilities. One shared calling:
To help providers who care for people in our communities and homes get credentialed, bill insurance, and get paid.

We are building Swishvo because too many providers have been expected to deliver essential care while navigating a reimbursement system that was never designed with them in mind.

They deserve more than encouragement.
They deserve infrastructure.
They deserve a team that understands the stakes and is willing to do the hard, detailed, often invisible work required to help them get paid.

That is who we are.
That is what we are building.
