Different by Design: the science behind how we care. 🔑

At this year’s TheKey Excellence Awards, Dr. Shadi Gholizadeh took the stage with a question: can home care really innovate?

Our answer is the Balanced Care Method®, six science-backed pillars built into every visit:
🏃 Move More
🧠 Flex Your Mind
🥗 Nourish & Hydrate
🤝 Connect With Others
✨ Engage With Joy & Purpose
😴 Sleep Well

When caregivers are set up for success, everyone wins: safer care, happier caregivers, and clients who don’t just get through the day, but live well.

Because there’s nothing ordinary about ordinary care. 💙

"When my family and I began the search for in-home care for my mom, we hoped to find a service that would offer her safety, comfort, and dignity. What we found in TheKey was something far more extraordinary." - Laura M.

The families who feel most confident in their decision are usually the ones who started looking before they had to.

If you've been through this search: what's one question you wish you'd asked earlier? Share it below for someone who's just starting.

Poor sleep is not just part of getting older.

Three habits that help:

Morning daylight within an hour of waking
The same wake time every day, weekends included
A wind-down routine that starts before bed, not in it

The Sleep Well pillar of our Balanced Care Method® builds these into daily care.

Save this for tonight, then tell us which one would be hardest to keep. Comment 1, 2, or 3.

15-minute breakfast that's good for your brain: Greek Yogurt Power Bowl.

Plain Greek yogurt, a handful of walnuts, sliced strawberries or blueberries, a spoonful of chia seeds, and a drizzle of honey. Layer and serve.

Omega-3s from the walnuts and chia, antioxidants from the berries, and protein to steady the morning. No stove, no cleanup.

Save this one and share your favorite easy breakfast in the comments.

Meet Maria Rondalli, a TheKey caregiver in Palo Alto for over 12 years.

"To me, being a caregiver means ensuring people feel valued, respected, and treated as the independent adults they are."

That's what good care looks like. Not taking over, but making it possible to keep going.

Memory prompt for today: think back to the kitchen you grew up in.

What did it smell like on a Sunday? What was always on the counter? Who did the cooking, and what was their signature dish?

Reminiscence like this does more than feel good. Recalling detail, sequence, and sensory memory is real cognitive exercise, and it's a core part of the Flex Your Mind pillar of our Balanced Care Method®.

Answer in the comments, then ask a parent or grandparent the same question. Their answer might surprise you.

One move that supports balance and leg strength at any age: the sit-to-stand.

Sit toward the front of a sturdy chair. Feet flat, hands on your thighs or the armrests. Stand slowly, then sit slowly. Five in a row, twice a day. Hold onto something steady if you need to.

It's National Physical Therapy Month, a good time to build one simple habit. Save this one and tag someone who should try it with you.

Our proprietary Balanced Care Method touts the benefits of aerobic exercise as being important for good health as we age. Walking is an excellent way to work in some aerobic exercise. Even short walks, when taken regularly, can be very beneficial to one's physical and mental health. Crave more variety? Summer is a great time to fit in more aerobic exercise. Gardening, golfing and swimming are all excellent choices. And if the weather is inclement, light housework is considered aerobic. Want something more fun? Dancing counts too! Happy moving this summer!

Coffee lovers rejoice! According to researchers, your morning cup of Joe may decrease your risk of Alzheimer's and dementia. And there's evidence it can protect against Parkinson's and liver disease and lower your risk for Type 2 diabetes and stroke. The good news is not limited to coffee... studies have found many of the benefits are related to caffeine and not just coffee. Of course, your should always rely on your P*P for recommendations on what's right for you, but all things being equal, it's great to know that one of life's simple pleasures -- a warming mug of coffee or tea -- is probably doing more than just your spirits.

How do you enlist your loved one's cooperation when s/he is resistant to care? Here are 5 things that may help: (1) Keep them involved in the decision, acknowledging their wishes and concerns, (2) Consider a trial period so your loved one gets to experience care and its potential benefits before deciding, (3) Bring in another perspective, which could include a sibling, close friend or medical provider, (4) Give them a list of ways that the care can benefit them and (5) Be patient and remain positive. Often it takes more than one conversation to arrive at the best solution that everyone can agree to. Need help with a loved one resisting home care?

Whether your loved one lives across town or hundreds of miles away, at some point, many adult children consider whether their aging parent(s) should move in with them. Having your parent in your home may make it easier to manage care. It can also be more cost effective than other options such as assisted living. If you choose to have your parent live with you, advance planning is key. How accessible is your home environment? How will you divide household costs and chores? How will decisions get made and conflicts resolved? How will care be provided as your parent's needs increase? Advanced planning and strong communication can help make this a successful transition and positive living situation for all involved.

Balance Care Method Basics: Social ties help keep us healthy by making us feel connected, reducing depression and keeping stress in check. It's important for seniors to have stimulating conversations every day if feasible. Daily phone calls and emails are an important part of a routine. And virtual or face-to-face visits with friends and family as often as possible help keep social ties strong. All our caregivers are trained in the Balanced Care Method, which includes initiating stimulating conversations and encouraging your loved one to engage with others whenever possible.
