Is it a stomach bug, food poisoning or something more serious?

Mild nausea, vomiting and diarrhea may improve with rest and fluids. But some digestive symptoms — like signs of dehydration, blood in your stool, vomit, a high fever or severe stomach pain — shouldn’t be ignored.

Understanding the warning signs can help you know when symptoms may be managed at home and when to seek urgent or emergency care.

We’re grateful to Texas Monthly for sharing the story of Lynn Harris, whose years of service have made a meaningful impact at St. David’s Medical Center.

Lynn has logged more than 3,000 volunteer hours, including years serving as a “baby cuddler” in our neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). By providing comfort to babies when parents or nurses could not be at the bedside, Lynn became a valued part of the support surrounding our youngest patients and their families.

That support is one part of the specialized care provided in our Level IV NICU, where our experienced team cares for premature and critically ill newborns. After a health condition affected Lynn’s balance and meant he could no longer safely hold babies, he found new ways to continue supporting the NICU and the people who make that care possible.

Watch Lynn’s story in “Texas Monthly Presents: The Story” on the PBS app or https://to.pbs.org/4hibz3v.

Some of the most complex beginnings call for advanced care and a team ready to act. Before Leni was born, her parents learned she had congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH), a serious condition in which organs from the abdomen can move into the chest and limit the lungs’ development.

After Leni was born, our St. David’s Medical Center care team supported her through diaphragmatic hernia repair surgery at just 6 days old and nearly seven months in our neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

We’re proud of the doctors, nurses and colleagues who brought their expertise, collaboration and compassion to Leni’s care — and who recently welcomed her family back to the NICU for a special reunion.

Starting a fitness routine after 50 doesn’t have to be complicated. The key is to start gradually and choose movement you can sustain.

A balanced routine can include:
• Cardiovascular activity, such as walking or swimming
• Strength training with bodyweight exercises, resistance bands or light weights
• Balance and flexibility exercises, such as stretching, yoga or tai chi

You don’t need a gym to get moving. Short walks, chair squats, wall pushups or a few minutes of stretching at home can all help you build a consistent routine.

Pay attention to how your body feels. If you experience sharp pain, dizziness or joint discomfort, stop and adjust your activity. If you have a medical condition, talk with your doctor before starting a new exercise routine.

Small steps can support strength, mobility and independence over time.

Texas heat is more than uncomfortable — it can put serious stress on your body.

Staying ahead of heat-related illness starts with recognizing the warning signs. Headache, unusual fatigue, dizziness, muscle cramps and nausea can be signs your body is struggling with the heat.

Physicians recommend making hydration part of your routine instead of waiting until you feel thirsty. When spending time outside, take breaks from the heat and pay attention to how you feel.

Heat can affect anyone, and older adults, young children and people with certain health conditions may have a harder time tolerating prolonged high temperatures.
