📚 Excellence in care goes beyond providing expert medical support — it’s also about creating meaningful moments for patients and families.

From Sept. 21-29, parents and nurses participated in our NICU Read-A-Thon, creating special opportunities for families to connect and bond with their babies through reading.

Our Level II neonatal intensive care unit provides specialized care for babies who need additional support. The Read-A-Thon was one more way our neonatal nurses supported babies and their families throughout their NICU journey while promoting connection and family-centered care.

Thank you to our neonatal nurses for the expertise, compassion and dedication they bring to every baby and family they care for. 💙

For many people with blood cancer or other serious blood disorders, a blood stem cell or bone marrow transplant can offer hope — and it often starts with a donor.

According to the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), most patients who need a transplant don’t have a fully matched donor in their family and rely on NMDP (formerly Be The Match) to help find one.

At St. David’s South Austin Medical Center, our Sarah Cannon Transplant and Cellular Therapy Program provides specialized transplant and cellular therapy care for patients with blood cancers and disorders. Our program has served more than 1,000 patients with a bone marrow donor transplant and is part of a broader network with extensive experience in blood and marrow transplantation.

🤢 Is it a stomach bug, food poisoning or something more serious?

Mild nausea, vomiting and diarrhea may improve with rest and fluids. But some digestive symptoms — like signs of dehydration, blood in your stool, vomit, a high fever or severe stomach pain — shouldn’t be ignored.

Understanding the warning signs can help you know when symptoms may be managed at home and when to seek urgent or emergency care.

Starting a fitness routine after 50 doesn’t have to be complicated. The key is to start gradually and choose movement you can sustain.

A balanced routine can include:
• Cardiovascular activity, such as walking or swimming
• Strength training with bodyweight exercises, resistance bands or light weights
• Balance and flexibility exercises, such as stretching, yoga or tai chi

You don’t need a gym to get moving. Short walks, chair squats, wall pushups or a few minutes of stretching at home can all help you build a consistent routine.

Pay attention to how your body feels. If you experience sharp pain, dizziness or joint discomfort, stop and adjust your activity. If you have a medical condition, talk with your doctor before starting a new exercise routine.

Small steps can support strength, mobility and independence over time.

Texas heat is more than uncomfortable — it can put serious stress on your body.

Staying ahead of heat-related illness starts with recognizing the warning signs. Headache, unusual fatigue, dizziness, muscle cramps and nausea can be signs your body is struggling with the heat.

Physicians recommend making hydration part of your routine instead of waiting until you feel thirsty. When spending time outside, take breaks from the heat and pay attention to how you feel.

Heat can affect anyone, and older adults, young children and people with certain health conditions may have a harder time tolerating prolonged high temperatures.
